November 2004. Fallujah, Iraq. Operation al-Fajr, "New Dawn."
The joint operation between the US Marines and the US Army task forces, including the favorably known "Blackjack Brigade", had Sergeant (Sgt.) Joel Morgan moving from house to house in the early morning, clearing buildings of Iraqi insurgents in the Jolan District.
Their teams work flawlessly together, differences put aside for the sake of their shared mission. That is, until they stumble upon the wrong nest of snakes (as dark as midnight) and there are mass casualties of their men — all because they accidentally shoot a jinn they mistake as a foreign insurgent.
Even after Joel leaves Fallujah behind and returns to his home in Northfield, Vermont, there are... things... that won't stop happening to him and the other soldiers who were apart of the incident.
Bad things. And he's not going down without a fight.
