"Delivery for a... Victoria James?" The man in a brown uniform states as he walks through the front door of the office, wheeling in a hand truck containing two large boxes.
"I'm Victoria!" I call out while walking towards him to sign the paperwork, my long ponytail swinging back over my shoulder.
I can feel his eyes roaming me while I scribbled my signature on the line at the bottom of the page indicating that I have received my shipment. The feeling makes my cheeks heat up and I inwardly wish that I had buttoned up at least once more on my white blouse and pulled down my pencil skirt just a bit before walking out of my office.
"Where would you like them?" The tall man asks trying to revert his eyes elsewhere as if I didn't already know he was looking.
Word to the wise, fellas... we know.
"My office, please." I turn around to walk in that direction and quickly tug at my skirt before he has a chance to finish picking up the boxes, "Right over there is fine." I point to an empty spot in the corner next to my shelving unit the moment we both walk inside.
Walking around my desk, I sit down in my large white leather chair and continue going over my calendar, making sure that no event is double-booked and that all schedules are running smoothly. The last thing I need is a bridezilla marching in here complaining that her laced trimmed napkins didn't arrive on time.
"Not married? I don't see a ring." He casually mentions, placing his hands into his pockets and raising up on his tippy toes. Everyone already kind of assumes that a wedding planner would also be married.
Glancing up at him, with my ballpoint pen still firmly grasped in my hand, I take a quick survey of the gentleman before me. He was tall and well built, his skin slightly tanned, and he had pretty almond-shaped eyes and a nice smile. All in all, he was attractive.
"Nope, not married. You?" I question as I reach up to grab one of the Manila folders from the far corner of my desk.
"I'm single." He smirks before turning his head towards my shelving unit where he sees some framed pictures aligned neatly, "Your niece is cute."
Softly smiling, I brace myself for what I expect to happen once I say what I'm about to, "That's my daughter."
"Daughter?" His voice fluctuates a bit at the end of the word as he bends his knees and squints his eyes to get a closer look at the photo.
"Mmhmm. She's three, four in a few months."
His eyes widen as he looks back over to me, readjusting his shirt sleeves nervously, "She's very cute. Have a good day ma'am."
Nodding back at him, I wave my hand, "Thank you. Have a good day as well."
I shut the door behind him as he leaves and a sigh releases from my lungs as, once again, a potential date ended quicker than it could start. I mean, it is better this way. I know who has a problem with me being a single mother before any of my time is wasted, but it would be nice for someone to accept me for everything I am without being a total creep or at least be willing to give it a shot before completely turning away.
Time and time again, this same thing has happened and by now, it's no surprise to me. Maybe Tae was right. Maybe I should at least get some action. Tonight was the night I'm supposed to go on that date with the next one in line on my Tinder app. Suppose I don't mention anything about being a mother. Perhaps I go into the date tonight with no expectations and just let it take me wherever. If I'm comfortable having sex with him and if there's enough spark, maybe I should. I'm an adult after all and I've learned my lesson about not using protection a long time ago. I've been on birth control ever since and will not go unprotected again until I meet the right one.
