Hospitals.

The one place that manages to bring the unlikeliest of people together. The hopeless, the scared, the free and the brave all bound together by one thing; life. Something that comes and goes so quickly, one can blink and miss it entirely.

The one place where someone could receive the best news of their life, rejoicing in the fact their loved one was okay or that their baby girl was born healthy; while the one next to them wallows in the news that their person - the one they had prayed for hours would be okay - isn't going to be coming home.

The one place where someone ends up when they have done everything to end their life, while the person in the room next to theirs is fighting with everything inside of them to stay alive.

It's funny how things work like that. That there is one place where the gift of new life is overturned by the crushing heartbreak of the sound echoing through the halls as a monitor flat lines. A place where someone could be having the best day of their life, as someone steps away from them is crumbing at the seems.

As Marley walked through the halls of Leighton, she couldn't help but notice the people that aimlessly roamed the crowded, narrow halls of the hospital as she went to see her mother. It had nearly been about two days since her mother had woken up, but the girl hadn't been able to find it within herself to go see her.

Her feet felt heavy as they moved through the fluorescent lights and marble floors, the dull paintings that hung high blended seamlessly into the eggshell white walls that surrounded her. The small table placed delicately in between two chairs matched the aesthetic due to the small bundle of white roses that were placed upon it. The one contrast that stuck out like a sore thumb was the blue cushions that were found on the back side and seat of the chair. The trio could be found all along the long hallway, family members sitting patiently with shaky legs and folded hands waiting to see their loved one.

It was dark out, the thunder from the storm booming through the ceiling. Visiting hours were soon coming to an end as she watched families saying goodbye to one another. Hugging and kissing their cheeks as they exited the room, causing her to secretly hope that was how her visit was going to end, with a hug and kiss as her mother promised once more to get better.

She continued walking until she made it to the end of the hall, the sound of heart monitors beeping loudly to signal that her mother was still alive and well - as well as one can be while recovering from an overdose.

The woman was asleep, the IV's still placed pericesly in her hand as the oxygen hummed softly through the machine hung above her and tucked safely in her nose, small squares of tape holding the sides to secure the small object.

She surprisingly looked peaceful, the rhythm of her breathing created a sense of calm through the air as the small girl stood quietly in the doorway, trying to find the courage to walk in. She closed her eyes momentarily, her heartbeat quickening as she exhaled softly, tucking her hands in the pocket of her light high waisted jean shorts to keep them from shaking. She opened them to see her mother moving slightly on the bed, taking that as her cue to walk in as she inched towards the chair that was placed beside the bed.
