1/17/21 - until next time

partings are never easy
but at least with
you
I never have to worry about
next time
because of course there will be
next time

best
doesn't even begin to
describe the friendship I have
in store for
you

I have a lifetime
planned
and I won't be
shorthanded or
shortchanged

partings are never easy
but at least with
you
a part of us
comes with
me

I carry that piece
of us
around in the pocket
where I keep
my heart

they beat in sync
matching my steps
as I count the footfalls
back to
you

partings are never easy
but at least
I know
you'll be waiting for me
on the other side of
separation
on the other side of
today or
tomorrow or
whenever our
'see you when I see you'
is finally cashed in

I'll be waiting for you
just as you left me
and we'll pick up where we left off
with a laugh
with a smile
with a 'stay for a while?'
and we'll trip through those
days-weeks-months-years spent
apart
with just a few stumbles 'til
I reach down next to my
heart
and slip out the piece of us
stored there and dwell

on how
partings aren't easy but
we do them well
