A/N: Soulmate!AU. Your James's soulmate but he doesn't know that. He keeps fawning over Lily believing she is his soulmate.

Y/n POV:
Soulmates. The person you would spend the rest of your life with. Your soulmark was a tattoo that identified your soulmate. Mine was antlers in the inside of my forearm. At the time I didn't know what it was, but eventually Remus told me the rest of the Marauders were animagus and his animagus was a stag. Remus and I were close friends, and he told me how James got his soulmark and it was some sort of flower. Apparently he immediately thought it was Lily Evans, not sparing a glance of what the flower actually was. Remus had a look at it and they were gardenia. My scent.

Remus would always tell me about how James was determined to get Lily as his soulmate. She hadn't gotten her soulmark yet due to the fact her birthday was for another couple months. Remus knew were soulmates. The antlers representing James and the gardenia's representing me. He tried to get James to understand, but it never worked. He was fixated on Lily being his soulmate.

Over the past 3 months, I watched my soulmate going after the girl who wasn't his soulmate while leaving his in the shadow, not sparing a single glance.

I was close with the Marauders along with Lily, Marlene and Alice. I didn't tell them about my tattoo because Lily did have a crush on James and hoped that he was her soulmate. I didn't want to ruin her moment.

"Are you ever going to tell him?" Remus asked as the two sat in the common room studying.

"No. He loves Lily and Lily loves him. I can't get between that." I answered.

"What do you mean you can't! You're his soulmate." He replied.

"Do you not see them, they love each other, he doesn't even spare a glance at me. It's for the better." I said. A part of me believed that they would have a life together and I would be left in the dust, but the other part hoped he finally see that she wasn't his soulmate.

"What's for the better." Sirius said as he, James and Peter walked into the common.

"Nothing." We both said quickly.

"Alright then. You should of  have seen how pretty Lily was today." James started. I learned to tune out his talks about Lily it was hard enough to see them together, I didn't want to hear about it every single day. Remus could see that I was zoning out and he gave me a slight frown. He knew how hard this was for me.

"WE GET IT! LILY IS SO PERFECT!" I shouted. James stopped talking and stared at him in shock along with Sirius, Peter and Remus.

"Are you alright, Y/n?" Sirius asked. I think Sirius had some details about my situation due to the fact Remus was his soulmate and they told each other everything.

"Just perfect." I grabbed my stuff and stomped up to my dorm room and slamming the door.

Remus POV:
"What the bloody hell was that?" James looked at the spot Y/n once sat in. Sirius and I looked at each other with a frown on our faces. It was time James knew about his actual soulmate.

"Um... James there is something we need to tell you." I said slowly.

"Padfoot, what's going on?" He looked between the two of us.

"Lily isn't your soulmate." Sirius said. James looked at us before laughing.

"Yeah and Remus isn't yours." He said through the laughter.

"We're not joking James." I said sternly. "Lily isn't your soulmate, someone else is."

"No they aren't, my soulmark are lilies, that represents Lily." He stated.

"Did you look closely at the flowers." I said. James untucked his shirt and lifted it up to reveal his soulmark on his lower chest.

"Those are lilies." He looked up back at us.

"Those aren't lilies, they're gardenia's." Sirius replied. "They look kind of the same but are two different flowers."

"See." Peter pulled out a book with a picture of gardenia's."

"Merlin." He muttered. "Those are gardenia's."

"Yeah." I whispered.

"Then who smells like gardenia's or likes them?" He looked at the three of us. We didn't say anything. "Who is it?" He said a little louder.

"Y/n L/n." I looked down. "She uses gardenia perfume."

"Shit." He whispered. "All this time I've been with Lily and she was there. And I didn't even know."

"You need to talk to her, Prongs. Imagine watching your soulmate go after someone who wasn't you for the past 3 months."

"I'm such a shitty soulmate." He looked up at us.

"Don't tell us, tell her." Peter said.

Instantly he got up and ran up to the girls dorm. "How did he not fall down?" I looked at Sirius and Peter.

"He's James Potter, he just knows." Sirius laughed.

James POV:
As I ran up the stairs to Y/n's dorm a heard quiet sobs from the other side of the door. I knocked waiting for her to answer, but nothing, I tried again.

"Go away." She yelled.

"Please Y/n, it's me, James. I want to talk." I pleaded. I heard footsteps and she opened the door when her eyes puffy and tear stained cheeks. "Can I join in?" She opened the door a little wider and both made our way to her bed.

"I'm sorry." I looked at her. "I didn't know you were my soulmate. It's just I always thought me and Lily would be together and once I saw the tattoo and the flowers I didn't think twice it would be someone else."

"I know this apology won't forgive the past few months of me leaving you in the dark. I always liked you but I thought you didn't have the same feeling so I went to Lily who I knew had reciprocated the feelings."

"I'm quite happy that my first love is my soulmate." I smiled.

"First love?" She whispered looking at me.

"Yeah, I feel in love with you during second year when you stood up to Lucius Malfoy in the corridor." I cupped her cheek with my hand, moving my thumb back and forth.

"I'm sorry." She whispered leaning into my hand.

"What do you have to sorry for. This was my fault, I should of have pay more attention." I answered. "Can I see your soulmark?"

She moved her left hand and turned it palm up and on her upper forearm was two black antlers.

"Remus told me about them, your a stag, it's your animagus." She looked up at me. I grabbed her arm and pressed a kiss on the mark.

"I love it." I looked up her at her eyes before darting down to her lips. "Would it be wrong if I kissed you right now?"

"Go ahead." She whispered. I leaned down and captured her lips onto mine. It was different than it was with Lily. With Y/n it was fireworks were exploding all around us.

I heard a wolf whistle and we broke apart to see Remus, Sirius and Peter cheering. She hid in her face in my neck and I could her feel her laughed on my skin.

I looked up to them and gave them a small smile. I found my true soulmate.
