I honestly wasn't aware of how long we had been driving though. The only thing I knew was that it was almost morning again. There was the possibility that I had spent the entire ride trapped in a daze or just staring out the window as the world passed me by. I actually could have been sleeping for all I knew, but I wasn't positive and at the moment I wasn't particularly worried about it.
We drove through a neighborhood and passed a bunch of houses. Men, whom I assumed to be Epps's reinforcements, all piled into different vehicles and followed closely behind us. We soon entered a tunnel and I was surrounded by darkness once again while Sam was busy rummaging through his bag and Epps tossed his phone onto the dashboard. I hadn't a clue what was wrong.
"We had a signal earlier. It's not working now," he stated. Sam threw his phone onto the dashboard as well.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"There's no signal anywhere," Sam answered me.
The morning light burst through the car windows as we exited the tunnel, but I was far more concerned at the sight in front of me. Dozens of vehicles were overturned in the street and some were even on fire and sat on top of hills of soot; people stood at the sides of the street with tears in their eyes and pained expressions on their faces while others ran for their lives or laid dead. Buildings were either completely destroyed or on fire. The entire city was in ruins. I hadn't seen anything like it before in my life. Egypt didn't even compare to this.
"Oh my gosh," I whispered as the screams of children flooded through my ears.
The sight only got worse and worse as we drove further and the only thing I could see in the sky were numerous alien ships. Epps came to a stop after we were further into the city and we got out, our eyes never leaving the destruction in front of us. Soon enough, we started walking but I was really skeptical about how far we were going to make it. By the looks of this, we'd probably be dead within the hour, and honestly, I was okay with it. Epps ran ahead of us and crossed a railroad track before climbing up onto a ruined structure. He turned around to speak, but before he could, the sound of fighter jets roared in the air.
Startled, I looked up to see three fighter jets making their way into the city but they were stopped short as two alien ships took them out with just a few shots. The only thing I could do was watch.
"We came here to find her in the middle of all that?" Epps shouted down to us.
"Are we really going out there Epps?" one of his men asked from behind me.
"I'm not going in there," another retorted.
"No one's going in," Epps countered.
"I am. With or without you I'll find her," Sam said as he began walking. I ran to catch up with him.
"You're going to get yourself killed. Is that what you want? You came all the way out here to get yourself killed," Epps chided as he appeared behind us. He grabbed Sam but Sam quickly yanked away from him.
"She's here because of me, do you understand?" He started walking again and I groaned.
"Listen to me. You go in this building, that's if she's even still alive, there's no way you're going to be able to reach her," he informed the stubborn boy.
Sam shot around to look at him. "What do you suggest I do?"
Epps sighed and I walked over to stand beside him. "It's over. I'm sorry, but it's over."
