A continuous, dull ache was the first thing to greet Clementine when she awoke. She had almost forgotten they were captives for the few moments before she was fully lucid, the sight of the bars and the raiders eating breakfast around a campfire jogged her memory however.
The second thing to greet her was Violet, gently running her fingers through her hair. Clem was lying flat on the ground, her head resting on Violet's lap. The blonde was sitting up, leaned against the back wall of the cage."Hey, you're up." She said, noticing Clem's eyes were open.
Violet stopped running her fingers through Clementine's hair.
"Could you, uhh... could you keep doing that?"
Violet breathed a small laugh through her nose and resumed what she was doing. Clem looked up at her, Violet's lips formed a soft smile. Clem found herself smiling too, despite their less than favourable situation. She quickly stopped smiling when a sharp, stinging pain radiated from her bottom lip where it had split the previous night."I feel like I got hit by a truck." Clem groaned.
"Fucking Lily." Violet shook her head, her smile turning to a scowl.
Clementine raised her hand behind her, holding it out in front of Violet. The blonde placed her free hand in Clementine's, squeezing gently.
The sound of boots crunching on the fresh snow came closer. The both looked around to see one of the raiders approaching the cage.
She haphazardly tossed a plastic water bottle and a plate of meat and bread into the cage, it miraculously landed without spilling the contents."Eat up." The raider said before she walked back to the fire.
Clem and Violet sat up as far as the cage would allow and put the plate between the two of them. She tore the bread in two and divided the pieces of meat in half. The bread was stale, but Clem was hungry enough that it didn't matter. The meat tasted like rabbit, probably stolen from their traps. The meagre portions weren't enough to satisfy them, but having something in their stomachs was better than going hungry.
Clementine hadn't noticed before, but Violet's coat was missing. The only thing she had to protect her from the cold was her long sleeve shirt, but it clearly wasn't enough based on her intermittent shivering.
Clem began taking off her own coat, wincing from the pain in her ribs that came with lifting her arm."What are you doing?" Violet asked, confused.
"It's too cold out here for you not to have a coat."
"No, thats yours. Keep it, I can manage."
"Violet, it's the middle of winter, you won't manage."
"Put the jacket back on, Clem. I'm not taking it, you need one too."
Clem sighed. Violet needed a coat, even a blanket would suffice. Lily had stated her plan to 'turn them into soldiers'. It stood to reason then, that ensuring their wellbeing would be among her priorities.
"Hey, guard!" Clem shouted, her lip again stinging from the movement.
None of them turned around.
"Guard!" She called again.
The same woman as before stood up and stomped across the snow towards them, a scowl on her face.
"What the fuck do you want?"
"My wife's coat is gone, it's too cold out here without one."
"Boo-fucking-hoo. What do you think this is, a hotel?"
"Lily wants us alive, right? If she gets sick or something, who's gonna treat her?"
"We've got meds."
