Something was beeping. Softly, like it was far away, but still there. You peeled your eyes open slowly, easing the crick from your neck, and looked down to see that you were laying almost on top of Schlatt, and that your head had been pillowed into his chest. He was sleeping - head tucked into the couch cushions, but the ghost of a smile on his face.
As you eased yourself off of him and the couch, last night came back to you. There were still hearts scattered across the floor, leading back to Schlatt's room. You smiled to yourself, giddiness pouring into your stomach, remembering the way he'd kissed you and kissed you and kissed you-
Where was that beeping coming from?
Getting up, you followed the trail of hearts back towards Schlatt's room, the beeping getting louder as you continued along. It sounded like it was coming from your room, so you opened the door, peering inside.
Your phone. On your bedside table. Buzzing with the alarms you'd set to remember to bring Schlatt to the airport. Because, as your mind helpfully supplied, he had a flight he was supposed to catch.
Grabbing your phone, you shut off the alarm and looked at the time. You had slept in by three hours. Panic surged in your chest and you scurried back to the living room, kneeling down next to the couch to place a hand on Schlatt's shoulder, shaking gently.
"Schlatt." You said. "Schlatt wake up."
Groggily, Schlatt peeled his eyes open, focusing on you. "What?" He asked sleepily, yawning.
"Your flight." You said. "We slept in-"
Schlatt smacked his lips together. "Oh damn. Yeah."
"You don't seem nearly as worried as you should be." You said.
Schlatt reached out, gently prying your phone from your hand and looking at the time with half lidded eyes. "Eh." He said. "There's no way I'm going to catch it now. I'll book another one later."
"But you already paid for the ticket-" You started.
Schlatt sighed, setting your phone aside and grabbing you by the waist, rolling so that he pulled you back onto the couch, almost in the same place you had woken up in. Two arms came to wrap around your back and he smiled, content. "It's not a big deal. You don't mind if I'm stuck here for a bit, do you?"
"I guess not." You said. "Still, I feel bad for making you miss your flight-"
"I didn't really want to leave anyway." He said with a shrug.
"Oh." You said, angling yourself so that you could look at him. You couldn't say you hadn't been feeling the same way - it was what had driven you to lay out all those paper hearts in the first place, and there was some comfort in knowing that you would have him for at least a few more days. Thinking about it now, it would have been really shitty to have made out and fallen asleep on the couch together only for him to get on a flight and leave the next day.
Maybe it was better this way.
Your thoughts were interrupted when Schlatt's stomach grumbled so loud that you could feel it. You couldn't help but laugh. "Hungry, huh?"
Schlatt grinned. "It takes a lot of fuel when you're this big." He said, hauling both himself and you off the couch.
You giggled as he set you down on the floor, and you headed over to the kitchen, stepping on a few paper hearts along the way. Hearing them crunch under your feet gave you an idea, and you found yourself searching for the pancake mix in the cabinets as Schlatt watched.
When you found it, you got right to work. "Pancakes good?"
"Pancakes great." Schlatt said, plopping down on one of the barstools to watch you work. "Do you think Maddy's going to be surprised when she comes back and I'm still here?"
"Maybe." You said, pouring the mix into a bowl. "I think she was kind of expecting-
"You to make a move, yeah." Schlatt said. "She wasn't subtle about it at all."
"Well, I mean, it worked, right?" You asked, turning to look at him over your shoulder at you prepared the batter.
"More or less." Schlatt said with a smile - that same soft smile that he had pinned you with last night.
You flicked on the stove and got to work with the pancakes, careful to keep them concealed as best you could - you didn't want to accidentally ruin the surprise. You poured the batter onto the pan and smiled as it began to sizzle and cook. It wasn't long before it was a nice golden brown and you flipped it off the pan, onto a plate.
"Pancake." You said, proudly presenting it to Schlatt.
He looked down at the heart shaped pancake and laughed. "What is it with you and hearts?"
"You don't love it?" You asked, sliding the plate over to him.
Schlatt smiled, reaching across the bar to grab your hand before you could pull away. "No, I do. That's exactly what I like about you." He tugged your forward slightly, until you were leaning over the bar and he could meet your halfway, pressing his lips to yours gently, smiling into the kiss. When you pulled back, that soft smile had returned.
You poured another pancake (heart shaped, of course) and Schlatt found the syrup and dug into his, absently talking about the news from the night before as he ate. You smiled to yourself as he made a joke about the awful taxes back home - there was something awfully domestic about it all. Him cracking jokes over a pancake as you made a few more - the sunlight streaming in the window, sticky note hearts scattered all over the floor.
"What are you thinking about?"
You turned to look back at Schlatt, who was finishing up his pancake, and shrugged. "This and that."
Schlatt grinned, and pointed to himself. "This and that?"
You rolled your eyes and took the last pancake off the pan, turning the stove off and joining him on the other side of the bar. When he kissed you, he tasted like syrup. A little sticky, but sweet.
