I looked at myself in the bathroom mirror once more. I was starting to like to person I was becoming. I gained a tiny bit of weight, though I still had a long way until not looking like a skeleton, it was physical proof that I, Gabrielle Stone the Addict, can become a healthy person. I started to gain color in my face as well. It seemed as though after I trudged through withdrawals, I was on a fast paced track to health and it made me tear up with joy. I played with my hair a bit before deciding this was as good as it was going to get. Today is the day I go on my first date. I giggled at the aspect of going on a "date" while in rehab. Does that even happen?
I skipped out of the bathroom before bumping into Alice.
"Hellooooo Alice" I chirped, surprising the aged nurse with my overwhelming sense of optimistic behavior.
"Okay child, who are you and what have you done with Gabrielle?" She smiled warmly.
"I'm just in a really good mood today, that's all." I grinned at her.
"And why is that? All that fresh air is really getting to your head, huh?" She chuckled.
"Well that, and my friend is contributing a lot to my happiness as well." Saying this caused her to raise an eyebrow.
"Oh? I didn't know you and Samantha were getting to be such goodfriends. I'm glad you're finding a supporting group of females to-"
"Oh Alice, it's not Sam I'm talking about. It's Ollie, from the male wing." I cheesily grinned.
Her smile fell a bit. "Oliver, as in tall, scrawny Oliver?" She questioned.
"Yeah.. that would be the Oliver I'm referring to." I said with a skeptical gaze. "Why?"
"No reason. Just remember to keep a strong head on your shoulders." She said quickly before walking off.
Oh boy, that was weird.
I started walking our trail until I was suddenly stopped by a bandana covering my eyes.
"What the fuck?!" I started to yell.
"Hey! Shhh. Do you want everyone to know what we're doing? Relax, it's just me" I heard Ollie's voice.
"Oh my god you scared me what the hell?" I quietly yelled.
"Sorry for this weird kidnapper-eqsue strategy but I want you to be surprised when you see it." He said, I could hear his smile through his voice.
He led me slowly down a trail and I felt the ground under my feet go from pavement to grass.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked.
"Don't worry, a few more steps and we'll be there." He replied calmly.
Finally we stopped walking and he took the blindfold off, revealing the cutest possible thing I've ever seen. There was a plain white bedsheet on the ground decorated with cartons of juice from the cafeteria, some obviously hand picked daisies in a plastic water cup, some sandwiches and bags of chips also from the cafeteria.
"I know it's not much but I pulled a few strings and after forming a secret friendship with one of the cooks in the cafe, he hooked me up with some grub. Also, I kind of just found that bedsheet in a closet off of the nurses' station so if anyone says anything about a missing bedsheet, you saw nothing." He laughed before meeting my gaze.
"Ollie this is..." I started before tearing up.
"Hey! Hey! Oh man, if you don't like it I'm sorry I'll clean it up and-" He started panicking before I stopped him.
"No Ollie, this is the sweetest thing any boy has ever done for me." I laughed.
"Wait really? Wow." He said shocked. "I just feel bad I couldn't do anything more to make this-"
I cut him off with a kiss. He was taken back at first, but then soon dominated the kiss. We kind of just stood there for a bit after the kiss, looking at each other.
"Wow, if this is my reward for this shitty picnic, do you wanna go on another one tomorrow?" He chuckled. I hit him lightly on the arm before we sat down on the blanket. We just talked about silly little stuff, not ruining the upbeat mood with any heavy conversation. I felt free with him.
"Hey so can I ask you something weird?" I asked, picking at blades of grass and not making eye contact.
"Yeah of course." He smiled.
"So I was talking to Alice this morning, you know the old nurse stationed outside of the girl's wing? Anyway, she asked me why I was in a good mood and I kind of just said that my friend was making me happy. She asked who it was and I said you and she kind of.... got weird." I said, still not making eye contact.
"Weird? How so?" He said flatly, sounding kind of irritated.
"Well she made sure you were the Ollie I was talking about and then she just said 'Just remember to keep a strong head on your shoulders' and practically ran away from me" I said, finally looking up to meet his gaze.
He sat there for a few seconds with a weird expression that I couldn't quite figure out. Finally, his face softened and his eyes met mine.
"She probably just doesn't want you hanging around with the opposite sex. They kind of believe that if a boy and a girl are in the same room they'll just start fucking. The staff is weird about that kind of shit." He replied.
"That makes sense I suppose..." I trailed off.
"I mean, if you don't want this you don't have to be here. But don't lead me on." He said in a flat voice, staring directly into my eyes.
I felt weird and afraid, like he was starting to not like me anymore. I don't know why but I had this need inside of me for him to like me and accept me.
"Of course I want to be here. I love this date so far." I smiled nervously.
He smiled softly and put my hand in his. "Good."
Just then we heard what sounded like someone stepping on a tree branch. Both of our heads jolted to see little Zip standing behind a tree.
"What the fuck is she doing here?" He spat, quickly packing out picnic up.
"What's wrong? It's just Zip." I responded, confused.
"Yeah who knows how long she's been standing there, she could totally throw us under the bus for being on this date and then we'll never see each other." He said panicky.
"Zip doesn't talk. At all. If you want, I'll go talk to her." I said calmly. I got up from the blanket and walked over to Zip. She looked very nervous.
"Zip. What are you doing here?" I said, as sweetly as possible to try to calm her nerves.
She looked down and shrugged.
"Listen Zip, me and Ollie are just friends. I was feeling bad so he did this for me to cheer me up. He's a really good friend of mine and I'm going to have to ask you to not say anything about seeing us here. To anyone. Okay?" I said slowly.
She nodded in agreement.
"Shake on it." I said, placing my hand out to meet hers.
She looked at it for a few seconds before sighing a bit and shaking my hand.
"Thank you. It means a lot." I said and hugged her. She smiled weakly and walked away.
I walked back to the blanket and sat down.
"So?" He asked impatiently.
"We're all set. She won't say a word. Not that she does anyway." I smiled, taking his hand in mine.
"Listen Gab-" He started. A weird pang hit my heart as he said Gab, it just reminded me so much of Alex. "-I'm going out on longshot here but I want to see you again."
"Yeah of course." I said
"No I mean, tonight." He responded.
"Tonight? Why tonight?"
"It's not anything sexual don't worry, I just have one last part of our date I want to accomplish, but we can't do it in the daylight. That sounds weird I know but I don't wanna give anything away." He rambled on. I stopped him with a quick peck on the lips.
"Just give me a time and a place." I whispered to him, inches away from his lips.
"Meet me back at the bench tonight at 12." He said simply, before brushing hair out of my face and kissing my cheek.
"It's a date." I smiled.
