Since the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire, the galaxy had been shrouded in darkness.

The same darkness that had slowly poisoned, consumed, everything in its path.

The repercussions of the Empire's tyranny were being felt everywhere; it was like spilled ink on fabric. Slowly, but steadily, it would spread, and it wouldn't stop until it tainted the entire piece of fabric.

Even the Force, the same living Force that flowed through everything, had been affected.

Perhaps that would explain why people had begun to change so fast. The selfless became the selfish, the kind became the cruel, and the Light withered, and became the Dark. All because of resentment and fear.

And there it was- another possible explanation as to why someone so selfless and so kind, had fallen so far, so fast from the Light they once held so dear.

Anakin Skywalker had been her mentor, her best friend, her brother. Yet on that fateful night when Order 66 had been executed, he'd become someone she didn't know, had gone down a path she couldn't follow.

That night, their seemingly unbreakable Force bond had snapped, overwhelmed by rage, grief, and betrayal. That night, a hooded figure made his way up the Temple steps, the 501st Legion in tow.

That night, Darth Vader took over, and Anakin Skywalker was no more.

Today, however, as Ahsoka watched the rays of the morning sun peak out from beneath the clouds, she smiled. She felt lighter than she had in decades, as if the heaviness constantly weighing on her had evaporated.

It had been so long since she'd last felt this light, this carefree.

Warmth had begun to trickle back into her living Force, and a doorway to a path she thought had long been barricaded shut began to creak.

Anakin was fighting Vader.

The door remained stubbornly locked, but the hits from the other side grew progressively stronger and stronger until all of a sudden, it was flung open. The Light that had been trapped in the Dark for so long had prevailed.

Anakin had returned.

Soon, however, the blinding Light that once again flowed through their renewed bond began to dim, his Life Force slowly becoming less and less prominent until it vanished completely.

Her former Master had been redeemed, finally overthrowing Vader for good, but he'd paid for it with his life.

The age of the Empire had spread terror into every corner of the galaxy, and sleeping with her lightsabers under her pillow had become a defence mechanism she relied on to stay sane. Having already been very in tune with the Force as a young girl, her Sensitivity and perceptiveness had only grown under Anakin and Obi-Wan's tutelage. She was able to detect even the slightest tremor of a disturbance in the Force, even in her sleep. It was slight, barely noticeable, but the former Jedi Padawan noticed it nonetheless. Ahsoka's eyes snapped open and in a split second, a white glow enveloped the dimly lit room — her lightsabers, igniting with a hiss.

"Who's there?" Ahsoka demanded, scanning every corner of the room with her sabers at the ready, moving along with her line of sight. She could swear she'd seen a faint blue glow somewhere... as it turns out, she hadn't needed to look very hard. A glowing blue orb, no bigger than the size of her fist, floated towards her. Its presence felt familiar, incredibly so. But there was no way. He was dead; she'd felt it.

"Who are you?" She demanded again. "What are you?"

Her answer came in the form of the orb as it slowly changed into a corporeal form. Legs, arms and hands began to appear before her very eyes until the shimmering form of Anakin Skywalker stood before her, in all his former glory. "No need to be so defensive, Snips, it's just me," he said softly.

The hold on her lightsabers went slack, eyes widening as she tried to process what had just happened. Minutes felt like hours while her mind raced, scrambling to find reason in all of this absurdity. How was he here? She had felt him go. Anakin waited patiently, never once losing the ghost of a smile lingering on his lips as he observed his old Padawan thoughtfully.

Finally, she swallowed, truly looking at him for the first time. "Hello, Master. It's been a while."

Anakin's smile was gone now, his expression unreadable. "Indeed."

Neither of them said anything for a very long time. There was so much to be said, yet nothing to say. How does one even begin such a discussion? After so many years of being apart, after so much death and destruction, most of which he was the cause of, their bond had long been severed. Though Anakin supposed that he should open the conversation. He owed her more than just an explanation. "Ahsoka... Ahsoka, I don't expect you to forgive me. I know I've done some... terrible things. Things that don't deserve forgiveness, especially not yours. I just- I just wanted to..." Come visit? Say hi? Suggest they go on a field trip to destroy the remnants of the remaining Empire loyalists?

"There's no point denying that you've done some horrible things," Ahsoka said instead, "and you can't deny the effects your actions have had on the galaxy. But I understand now, why you did it. I cannot say it's justified, Anakin, because a lot of it isn't, but from your perspective, your actions made sense."

Anakin had expected to see hostility in her eyes, even anger, bitterness, and disappointment, but her gaze, while hard, was not unkind.

"I'm just glad you're back, Master. I've missed you. More than you know."

He didn't get emotional very easily, but his eyes stung at her benevolence. He didn't even notice he was crying until her thumb wiped his tears away. "I don't deserve your kindness, Ahsoka," he whispered against her nightdress. (He'd only noticed she was nearly the same height as him after she wrapped him in a tight hug.)

"Shh, none of that," she replied, her own eyes sparkling with emotion. "We can discuss this another time, but for now, just relax."

Neither of them cared about how this might seem to anyone who walked in. It was, after all, in the middle of the night. The only thing that mattered was the two of them, Master and Apprentice, Brother and Sister, had been reunited at last.

A/N: hello lovely readers! This was such a heartwarming scene to write, I loved every part of it. you might be wondering why I dedicated this chapter to ashskywalker66. It's because her amazing one-shot book's first chapter was also something like this; Anakin and Ahsoka reuniting after Skywalker overthrows Vader. I got inspiration from that, everyone go check out her profile!

May the Force be With You!
