Wassup you guys?! I had a tournament today and we won our pool undefeated and I'm in a good mood so I'll post a long chapter today! Keep in mind I'm not good at really writing out action so if you're confused I totally get it, just ask questions! I'll answer them I promise. Enjoy!(Also I was dumb and didn't do any research so this is probably all wrong)
The game started off without a hitch, and right off the bat, I figured out what made Niiyama so strong: Their defense was miles ahead of their offense. Their power when it came to spikes definitely wasn't as strong as Aihara on any account. Their block wasn't there, but their back row was unmatched by anyone in the prefecture. Their red and white jerseys were blurs as they whizzed across the court.
So of course it was a struggle to score a point ever. They just waited for our team to make an error.
The score was 3-9 Niiyama in the lead when Michimiya had our club sponsor to call a timeout.
"Okay, how are we supposed to score against these guys?" Michimiya asked no one in particular. "It's as if the entire court is covered."
And for some reason everyone looked to me.
"Ummm, maybe don't go after the back row."
"What does that mean? Sasaki asked.
"Well their back row is giving us the most trouble right?"
Everyone nodded.
"Then go for the front row. Their block isn't that high, just tip right over it, and once they catch on to that and move forward, hit deep."
"That should work," Michimiya said and turned to Sasaki, who was in the middle blocker position at that point.
"I want you to push it to deep corners. Right in the seams."
Sasaki nodded and we all leaned in.
"KARASUNO FIGHT!" She cheered.
"FIGHT!" we all cried in response just as the whistle blew to signal the end of the timeout.
Niiyama served us, and Michimiya received the ball. Aihara got the ball from Manami and tipped it right over the block, scoring a point.
She clapped me on the back as we all cheered.
"Good work," she yelled, along with the rest of the team.
Alright, 4 serving 9, we're just getting started.
My turn to serve, and I popped it just above the net, just like Suga did with Aoba Josai. I scored a couple aces to my name and when the front row finally caught on and let the back row sneak in and steal those balls, we ended up winning the point anyway, giving me the chance to serve deep instead.
We lost the run when they finally got a block on us that Manami couldn't retrieve, but the score was now tied at 9.
Que the little montage of each team scoring point by point, the tie never changing. This goes to 23-24, Karasuno with set point.
(I know I'm lazy, but I'm tired and you gotta get the picture)
I was off the court with Watabe, watching Sasaki serve. Her serving power was huge, but that didn't mean that it floated. The toss looked good, her approach looked good, and her contact with the ball was good. It was a good aggressive floater that totally stunned the other side because she had messed up a couple before.
But they got it up out of system and tipped it over our block. I thought it was down when Kikuchi's hand barely saved it.
"It's up!" she screamed. Watabe and I jumped up and down, as Manami got under it to send it over as well. Niiyama's captain turned around to cheer as the ball clipped the net.
She didn't think it was gonna go over, but it did.
The net folded and the ball fell to the side of the opponents and the whistle blew to signal our point.
We took a set off of the team that took Shiratorizawa to five.
Watabe and I ran over to help up Kikuchi and congratulated her on the pancake.
"Oh my gosh that was so amazing!" Watabe marveled. "Amazing play! AAHHHH!"
We all congratulated her and she sheepishly waved it off as if it was no big deal.
I looked over to Niiyama and their captain. Her long brown hair fell over her eyes, but she didn't wipe them away, for fear of the rest of the team seeing the tears. And that's when I knew we'd win this.
I told this to my team when we switched sides.
"You guys, aim for the captain, pick on her. I just saw her holding back tears. If we get to her, that will spread through the whole team," I explained.
"Let's build off of that guilt and destroy them from the inside out!" Manami growled.
"YEAH!"
The next set ended up going even better than I expected. Their captain was more distraught and Aihara even said that her tears were streaming down her face at the start of the set.
The rest of the team was on edge after that and even shanked a couple serves right off the first points. We won that second set in a landslide with an ending score of 14-25. I would have described it more, but everything kinda blurred together after the first couple points.
All I remember now is cheering at the fact that we beat the queens. We pulled off a major upset in the rankings and were so prepared to do the same for the next match. Karasuno was on the rise, and Wakutani South was about to take the full force of our energy and drive.
I saw them watching us cheer, their faces pale and worried. Their bright salmon jerseys weren't hard to spot.
After they came on the court to warm up, Karasuno huddled to try and get a game plan going.
"Alright, we all know that Wakutani is going to be different from Niiyama. But if we can beat the queens, then we can beat these Wakutani wimps!" Aihara encouraged us. We all nodded and got pumped for the next match, which was sure to be won.
I LOVED digging Wakutani's hits. The force was there, but they were easy to direct. Their serves were harder to receive, especially from their captain, who had some sort of weird hybrid that both floated and spun like a topspin. Yeah, she scored a couple aces on some of those. I'd have to learn how to serve like that.
We were both pretty evenly matched, nobody ever getting more than five points above the other. We went on a run, then they went on a run. I'm sure it was a fun game to watch, but it was excruciating to play.
The only play during the first set that really stuck out to me was when we were receiving the serve, and Michimiya caught a high ball that only bounced a couple feet off of her. Being me, I hustled my ass off and ended up getting it off the ground at the expense of my body.
Ignoring the new pain in my hip that would eventually leave a bruise, I got up and watched it fly over, then when the other team went to spike it, they were stuffed by Aihara and Sudou.
An amazing play that bruised my hip was just what the team needed to get their groove back and take the first set. It was during that little passing period that we switched courts that I realised that the next match would be the championship to determine whether we go to Nationals.
I had never been this nervous for those matches before, but there I was, practically trembling in the huddle. Luckily no one but Michimiya noticed, and when we got back on the court, she addressed it.
"Hey, you okay?" she asked me, her hand on my shoulder. I nodded.
"Yeah, I just kinda got in my head, but I got this."
"Good. We can't have you crapping out on us alright?"
"Right."
