"Would you like me to make breakfast," Armin asks as he stands in front of me.

"Do you like to cook?" You question, wondering why he offers so much.

"It's a good way to stay busy," he laughs lightly, the sound pleasing to hear. "Is that a yes?"

"Uh, sure."

Armin gives you another one of those sweet smiles and exits the room, wearing a baggy blue t-shirt and brown loose pants.

You sit down on your bed, now deciding that you won't be going outside. Instead, you take hold of the wood box and stare at the ring inside.

It hurts so much... You wish Bertholdt would've been there the day Reiner, Zeke, and Pieck came back from this island.

~Flashback to 4 years ago~

"They're back," Colt comes into the medical room that you're in, pretending to be dizzy so you can miss out on the training.

"Who?" You sit up and sigh tiredly.

"Reiner and the others. They're back from the island," he smiles at you. "I just heard the captains talking about it in the hall."

You stand up from the bed, not bothering to put your shoes on. You push past Colt as you head into the hallway, taking a sharp turn towards the conference room.

You feel an unimaginable amount of joy, thinking you'll finally be seeing Bertholdt after all these years. You've been waiting for this moment for so long and it's finally here.

With your smile bigger than ever, you throw open the door to the meeting room, seeing four people sitting around a table.

Your eyes scan over their faces, seeing Pieck, Zeke, Reiner, and your captain. Reiner looks totally empty. His eyes are glazed over and focused on the table in front of him, no sign of life in them. Zeke and Pieck look okay though.

"Where's Bertholdt?" You furrow your eyebrows in confusion. "Was he hurt? Is he in the infirmary? What about Annie?"

No one seems to look at you. You notice Reiners hand clench on the table and the way Zeke and Pieck's faces fall.

"Y/n..." Pieck stands up and limps over to you, taking your shoulder with her hand. "There's something—"

"No-" your legs give out underneath you. "Don't say it. Please don't..."

Reiner finally snaps back into reality and looks down at you while you sit on your hands and knees, breathing fast and shallow.

"I'm sorry y/n," he stands and kneels in front of you. "I couldn't save him."

"You're wrong... he's okay. He can heal! We have to go back for him," you cry out. "We need to go back!"

"Y/n, he's gone."

Your eyes lift to Reiners, seeing the despair reflected back at you. You're not sure how to move or how to speak. Everything seems to be much harder to do.

"I'm so sorry," Reiner slams his fist on the ground. "I failed."

You sit back, head leaning against the wall behind you. You close your eyes, the sobs beginning to take over. The others just sit there, not sure how to comfort you.
