Chapter 37

Beomgyu POV

Taehyun and I take a good minute to get back to our senses, but once we do, he quickly throws away our drinks and we leave the café. He tells me that the nearest hospital is a ten minute walk away, and asks if I need to be driven there or if I can walk. I know that waiting for a taxi might be longer - no one will want a blood-coughing guy in their cab - so I say we can walk. We walk fast, and end up at the hospital in 5 minutes. I am directly brought to the ER, still coughing, with Taehyun following me. The nurses lay me down in a bed, telling me I'll be fine, and after a few minutes, a doctor comes in, asking that I follow him. We go to some sort of X-Ray thing except it's not an X-Ray thing and the doctor takes not-X-Ray pictures of my back. Then, he brings me back to my bed and investigates the pictures. It takes him about 5 minutes, meanwhile I'm just dying, somehow losing blood, with a constant high chance of death because of ALS. When he comes back, he looks at Taehyun, then at me, with a stern look, and asks me some questions, like where I was today, if I felt something odd before during maybe the last week, etc. Everytime I answer, his face degrades in hope. It takes him an extra minute to finally tell me what's going on.

"Your left lung is burst. Like, ripped apart burst. I think it was already thin before, and because of the first coughing fit you had earlier today, it ripped even more, and what truly made it rip was your really heavy breathing due to your illness"
"Wait… He's dying?!" Taehyun quivers. I'm also pretty nervous.

That's it.

That's the end of me.

I don't want to die. Not now. Not when I finally felt hopeful about my condition.

The doctor keeps talking, mostly to Taehyun, asking him if he's my sibling or if we're related, if I have any family left, or someone close. Taehyun answers all the questions, and the doctor tells me he'll bring me to a legitimate hospital room. Once I'm there, he asks Taehyun for the phone numbers of my family or close relatives, or simply people who might want to be informed of the matter. He asks me to write 'Ma's, and he gives the doctor Yeonjun's. I don't really want to tell my brother, he won't come anyway. The doctor sits beside me on the bed, saying he'd rather be beside me when talking to them than alone in his cabinet so that I know what he's saying. He puts the call on speaker after 'Ma answers, she's the first one he calls.

"Hello?" I hear 'Ma say.
"Are you Ms. Choi? Beomgyu's mother?" asks the doctor.
"Yes, why? Who are you? Did something happen?"
The doctor looks at me. I wish I could talk to her, tell her that I'm okay, even if I'm not, but I keep coughing out blood silently and can barely catch my breath. "I'm a doctor, Dr. Lee. Beomgyu was brought to the hospital just 10 minutes ago-"
"Which one? I'll be right there" she cuts him short. I can hear her fumbling with things, getting ready.

The doctor sighs and gives her the address before ending the call. Right before he dials Yeonjun's number, he realises I'm not connected to any regulator and can't breathe, so he connects me to both an oxygen regulator and something to recollect the blood while Taehyun briefly explains my relationship with Yeonjun. He tries his best not to just say we're boyfriends, but in the end the doctor gets it anyway. Not that I care if everyone knows, especially now.

Again when Yeonjun answers the call, Dr. Lee puts him on speaker. "Hello?"
"Hello sir, are you Mr. Choi Yeonjun?"
"Himself, and who are you?" I hear Taehyun chuckle at the 'himself'.
"Dr. Lee. I'm here with Beomgyu - Choi Beomgyu"
In the time it takes for Dr. Lee to formulate his thoughts, Yeonjun starts asking questions: "Is he okay? Is he with Taehyun? Can he talk to me?"
"Sorry sir, he… burst a lung and is already having trouble breathing"
"Can… Can I come visit?" He doesn't seem so sure about being able to come, but he still asks.
"Yes, sir, until 9pm"
"I'll try to come" informs Yeonjun before bidding Dr. Lee goodbye and ending the call.
