"Helmut, it doesn't have to be like this. This isn't what our son would have wanted." You pleaded to your husband. The night air was thick and tense between you two, your silhouettes illuminated only by a few dim lamps and the gentle moonlight pouring in from the large window your husband was staring out of, his shaky hands clutching a family photo of you two and your son Carl.

"We don't know what he would have wanted, those bastards didn't let him live long enough to let him tell us. If he had survived this would be an entirely different situation." Helmut's words were calm, yet hit you as hard as they would if he had yelled.

"It wasn't their fault, they had no way of controlling the damage! Carl adored the Avengers, you can't just make them kill each other!" You reached out a hand to touch your husband's arm, but he shrugged it off as soon as your cool skin made contact with his warm body.

"That doesn't make it right. That doesn't make any of this okay. I lost him, I lost my father, I almost lost you." Helmut gently placed the photo down on the table in front of him before spinning around to face you. His expression was steady and in control as he always was in arguments, but you were his wife, you knew him better than he knew himself and could see the pain that laid within his eyes. "Do you know what it's like? To search through rubble for days on end, only to find your wife clutching your son's corpse, your fathers body lying right beside them?" His voice cracked which was unusual for him.

"Helmut, I lost a son and father-in-law that day. You're not the only one going through this. I'm hurting too!" Your eyes stung and grew cloudy with unfallen tears.

"If you were truly hurting you would agree with what I have to do." He spat, his words like knives piercing your heart. You could tell he regretted them instantly, his stoic face dropping as soon as the tears flowed down your face in fat streaks. Helmut reached his hand out to you, to try and touch you gently and give you some comfort. You could see the apology dancing on his lips but you spun around before it could leave his mouth, unable to face him.

"Leave then." You said, your voice choked by a sob that was trapped in your throat.

"Liebchen..." Helmut muttered the affectionate name in disbelief, which only enraged you.

"Leave! You're not the man I've married, you're obsessed with revenge. You can stay or you can go on with your plan, either way I've lost you!" You shouted desperately, turning back around to face your husband. You weren't often one to raise your voice which startled Helmut.

His shocked face morphed back into one of stoicism, his emotions only shown through his eyes and clenched jaw. "If that is what you want I will. There was nothing keeping me here anyways." He sneered, grabbing a bag and beginning to pack his things.

You retreated to the bathroom, locking yourself in and sinking to the ground, your body leaning against the wooden door as your hands covered your mouth to not let out any sound. It wasn't until the rustling stopped and the front door slammed that you removed them, allowing your pained wails to echo throughout the empty house that was once full of joy and life. He was gone, and now you were truly alone.
