I clamp my hands over my ears to try and block out the blaring alarm. "Ah!"
"You!" We look and see Hap stomping towards us. "Step away from the yurt!"
"What's going on?" I hear Tiff call as she comes racing forward with the whole group. "Isn't it obvious? The chatty one, the one with the hair, and jungle girl were trying to sneak into the yurt," he says before pressing a button and the alarm stops much to my relief. "These kids can't go snooping into private spaces."
Brooklynn narrows her eyes at him and Tiff gently grabs onto Hap's arm with both hands. "Now, now, Hap. I'm sure it was all a misunderstanding."
"Misunderstanding? Do yourself a favor and stay out of my yurt," Hap warns sticking his finger into Brooklynn's face which makes her glare darken. "Let's talk about this calmly, okay?" Tiff suggests as she pulls him away from us to talk privately. "Sorry about that. It's our first time working with Hap, and he's very protective of his yurt."
I look over and see Tiff patting Hap's arm in an attempt to calm him before looking back at Mitch. "Set it up himself, moved all the equipment in. Hasn't even allowed us in."
"Ha! See? See?" I shake my head as Brooklynn exclaims triumphantly. There's a time and place for these things, now is not one of them. "Maybe we should postpone our trek. You've all been through a lot. Especially, that one... it seems."
"No, it's... it's fine. Brooklynn won't touch the yurt, and we'll all go to the place I wanted to show you."
"Uh, Darius? I think maybe we should freshen up before we decide that," Brooklyn suggests and I mentally groan, not wanting to be crammed into that small of a space again. "We already freshened up."
"Can never be too fresh." Darius gives in and suddenly we're back in the bathroom, hiding behind the curtain. "Really? There isn't anywhere else we can talk?"
"Hap is definitely hiding something," Brooklynn whispers and the others shake their heads. "I agree with Brooklynn, why put an alarm on a yurt if you have nothing to hide?"
"Uh, so a dinosaur or a you can't sneak in and wreck his stuff," Yasmina states and gestures in my and Brooklynn's direction. "I was there, too, guys and that alarm was definitely crepuscing me out," Kenji says defensively and at this point I can't even be annoyed at him for being so wrong. Darius scoffs and Brooklynn turns to look at him.
"Typical."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You can't just let this conspiracy stuff go, huh? And for what? A new video to boost your followers?"
"Who said anything about followers? You think I'm doing this to get attention?" My eyes widen as Darius and Brooklynn go at each other. They never fight. The only time I ever saw Darius even annoyed with her is when we found that ACU van with the tablet.
"Yes! That's your whole deal. You're mad Mitch and Tiff haven't heard of you, and now you're doing this."
"And what's your whole deal, Darius? Dinosaurs?" She gets up and moves closer so she's in his face. "You care more about them than actual people."
"That's hilarious! You calling me selfish."
"You're obsessed. Just because Mitch is acting all "cool dad" with you doesn't..." All our eyes widen as that sentence leaves Brooklynn's mouth. Why would she even say that?! Darius steps back with a pained look in his eyes as he's reminded of his deceased father. "Oh... No, D-Darius. I- I didn't-"
He doesn't give her a chance to finish and turns around, yanking the curtain open before leaving the yurt. Ben looks at her and with a shake of his head follows after Darius. "Not cool, superstar," Yaz murmurs before leaving too, Sammy follows her and Kenji pulls me behind them by our connected hands.
