Y/n's pov

Night had fallen and a thick layer of fog coated the junkyard.

Lucas put his binoculars around his neck and climbed up the rickety ladder to the top of the bus as lookout.

He positioned himself on his stomach, hiding behind the row of old tires we had placed at the top of the bus.

Max, Dustin, Steve and I waited patiently inside the bus, Dustin and I sitting on one of the bus seats together while Max sat on one across from us, Steve sitting on another.

Steve flipped his lighter open and closed over and over, his eyes glued to the small metal contraption.

"So you really fought one of these things before?" Max asked Steve.

Steve gave Max a flat smile and a nod before going back to his lighter game.

"And you're like, totally, one hundred percent sure it wasn't a bear?" Max asked.

Steve gave a weak breathless chuckle.

"I promise you it wasn't a bear. I wish it was a bear. Right Dust?" I asked the boy who was now nervously pacing the bus back and forth.

"Shit. Don't be an idiot, okay? It wasn't a bear." Dustin said to me for absolutely no reason at all.

Max and I both did a double take, surprised at Dustin's sudden outburst.

My heart kind of broke a bit when he said that. He was always on my side and never went against me. This was something new.

He was acting odd.

"Jeez, no need to be so rude to her." Max defended me, as I got up and sat next to her.

Dustin frowned a bit when I sat away from him but quickly retaliated.

"Why are you even here if you don't believe us? Just go home." Dustin said.

Max's eyebrows raised as she got up from beside me and headed for the ladder.

"Just because I don't entirely believe you doesn't mean I don't want to help." Max said, smiling at me empathetically as she climbed the rusty old ladder.

"Someone's cranky. Past your bedtime?" I asked Dustin with a chuckle.

He slightly glared at me and I put my hands up in fake surrender.

"Jesus Dustin. What's your problem." I asked, standing up and going to get my backpack that I had thrown somewhere in the bus.

"That's good. Just show her that you don't care." I heard Steve say, and I looked back to see Steve gesture to me.

"I don't." I heard Dustin say in a weirdly upset yet flat voice.

I walked back to them to see Steve winking at Dustin.

"Why are you winking, Steve?" Dustin asked, slightly annoyed and slightly nervous now that I had come back. "Stop."

I placed my headphones on my ears and hit play on my Walkman.

I went outside, picking up a folding chair, Steve and Dustin inside of the bus and Lucas and Max on top of the bus, when a wild growl echoed in the distance.

What do you think? I think you're an idiot. (Dustin Henderson x Reader)Where stories live. Discover now
