Once upon a time long ago
A hen had two chicks,
One was Lalu and the other was Peelu
Matching colours they used to pick.
Lalu liked red things while
Peelu was fond of yellow,
And once when they were eating
Lalu was eating very slow.
He kept eating and the others left
Then he saw a thing on a plant,
It was pure red and as attractive
As the sweet sugar to an Ant.
He went on and ate it but
The next moment was a panic,
It was a hot and spicy red chilly
Loudly cried the small red chick.
Hearing his cries Peelu came
And predicted the condition well,
He went to fetch a yellow laddoo
To drag Lalu out of the hell.
Lalu cooled down by the sweetness
Of the laddoo and his brother,
While the happiest to see them
Was their caring and loving mother.
(Red is called Lal in the Hindi language while yellow is called peela)
