I sat at my mate's desk and stared at the phone. My whole body was tense while I waited for the phone to ring, and I prayed that he would be able to call me soon because it meant that he was alive.

It had been an hour since I had gotten home, and I had been in the office all that time, waiting and praying that Cornelius would call me sooner rather than later, but he hadn't, and I was getting antsy.

My mare knocked on the door and peeked his head through it, not going in all the way like I thought he would. Worry filled his eyes, and he looked at me with lips pressed into a thin line, wondering what the verdict was. "Well?" he asked and raised an eyebrow.

I took a small, sharp breath and shook my head while I let it out with a small hiss. "No," I said, finally and slouched back in my seat. "There's nothing yet."

My mate frowned and nodded before he raised his other eyebrow. "May... I come in?" he asked and raised his eyebrow higher.

I sighed and rubbed the bridge of my nose while I shook my head, not knowing why my mate just didn't decide to walk in. "I mean, this is your office," I said and looked at him while I placed my hands into my lap. "So why should I kick you out of it if this is your spot?"

Brody smiled a little and dipped his head. "Actually, it is our spot," he said. He walked in and closed the door behind him. "So, if you want to be alone in our office, then you can be alone in our office." He pointed towards the door, and I raised an eyebrow in question. "However, Carver is leaning against the door, waiting for you to call him in."

I bit back a snort and rolled my eyes, knowing full well that was where he placed himself. "Of course he is," I said. I held my hands towards him, and my mate walked over to me, the bond between us growing stronger. "I think I am going to let him suffer and stay out there."

My mate chuckled and picked me up as if I weighed nothing. He sat down and pulled me onto his lap, and I closed my eyes and rested my head against his chest with a happy sigh. His heartbeat was calming and soothing, and I relaxed in his arms while I waited for Cornelius to call, even though I was getting impatient and worried that something bad had happened to him.

"I'm scared," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I cleared my throat but didn't shift in my seat, knowing full well that I could make him feel something when there was a chance that we couldn't do it yet.

My mate stiffened beneath me, and I could tell that he didn't like it that I was scared. However, he quickly relaxed because he knew that was what I needed instead of him getting freaked out because I was. "About what?" Brody asked and continued rubbing my arm in circles with sparks appearing in its wake.

"Cornelius has not called me yet," I said and moved a hand through my hair while I shook my head and grimaced. "What if he doesn't call me?" I asked, voicing my concerns out loud. "What if he is stuck somewhere, and he is in danger? What if Dominic knows that Cornelius is on my side and not his any longer? What i-"

I was cut off from my questioning when the phone rang. My whole body grew tense while I stared at the phone, not knowing what to do.

Brody chuckled behind me and picked up the phone call, ignoring my soft growl. He bit back another chuckle by clearing his throat while he shifted underneath me and becoming the Alpha I had seen before during meetings. "This is Brody Cleveland of the Variety Falls Pack speaking. How may I help you?"

There was a long pause on the other end of the line, and my mate and I looked at each other. Still, they didn't say a word, and I couldn't help but wonder if it was a fake call.

"Hello?" my mate asked and raised an eyebrow at the phone. "Is anyone there? Can I help you with something?"

Again, no one said a word.
