Quietus

A lonely attic ... a terrace wall
 He sat in a daze;
          t h o u g h t s
a cloudy halo
in that blue misty haze.

Coarse fingers cradled a Mother Goose,
   Reliving memories of those sleepy-rhyme days;
So buoyant and yet impalpable.

A truth unalloyed; conspicuous like snow night blooms
 in the bosom of the verdant, bright-
And yet so hard to accept.

Out in the darkness, in the rooftop beneath the sky,
 a sole sky lamp, shone guiding-
        Lost souls on their way.

And unseen, a young father grieved
             his lost child's play.

I am not aware of other cultures, but skylamps, or "akashpradip" is a well-known concept among Bengalis. In the month of Kartik, just before winter sets in, skylamps are lit in rooftops all over Bengal. They are thought to guide ancestral spirits on their divine journey.
