“When are you leaving ?” Lucy put away some papers scattered on her desk and glanced at you.
“In a few hours.”
After weeks of sitting in a dark room by yourself while Sam was interrogating people, Happy and Mrs Potts finally gave up and agreed to let you go on a field trip. Bruce explained that it was actually just a training session and that you both needed to evaluate your progress. You had passed every test in the lab with great success, but you had never been put in any other situation than Sam’s interrogations.
After Bruce promised to keep a close look at your brain activity the whole time to make sure you were safe, Happy made you go over the security rules you had to follow. There was actually only one rule, and he would call you at any time of the day -or night- just to ask you “What do you do if-” questions.
And the universal answer to that was : “I stay in the car, hide and wait for Sam.”
He was acting as if you were being thrown in the middle of a battlefield. The truth was very different. You were just going to wait in a car and scan a whole building. Nothing more. And it would indeed be a decent training opportunity.
After a couple of months training at work, you had realized that you were starting to guess whose brain you were inside. The way they were thinking maybe, or your brain was just getting used to the same people over and over again. According to Sam, there would only be a minimal amount of people in the building, and Bruce needed you to get better at jumping from mind to mind without a visual connection to the person.
You were actually more afraid of getting on a plane than anything else.
“Hey, YN.” You glanced at Lucy and noticed she was smiling. “Bucky’s coming too, right ?” You didn’t say anything, and just nodded at her while scanning a woman who entered the building a few seconds ago. “Did he call you after last time ?” You sat on the edge of Lucy’s desk, facing her.
“Oh yeah. Yeah, he texted me.” You took out your phone and read out loud. “We’re taking you to Dallas, Banner will explain it to you.”
“That’s it ?”
“That’s it.”
You told her about the pretended search for Juan, and made her swear to never tell anyone. No one authorized you to go work outside with Bucky that night but again, it was probably not about working anyway. Since then, you hadn’t talked to each other, and you were quite confused about the whole thing. And that was why you talked to Lucy about it.
None of you talked much when he walked you home that night. You caught him looking in your direction a few times, but he didn’t say anything. You considered getting in his head but he would have noticed. And then you would have been forced to explain why you did it, and it would have been awkward. So you didn’t do anything at all and kept walking.
By the time you arrived at the steps in front of the apartment, you were already wondering if you had said anything wrong or inappropriate that would explain why he had been so quiet. He said something about your hair looking nice, then mentioned your failure at catching Juan, said goodnight and left.
And you just stood there like an idiot for a while, wondering what exactly happened. Or did not happen. It was not like you were waiting for anything, but you were not used to that. Not knowing what people were thinking. Sometimes it amazed you how normal people could just live without imploding from the amount of overthinking. You enjoyed the evening though, and you were now considering the idea of dating someone again when all of this would be over.
Anyway, there hadn’t been any contact since that day. He didn’t call, and you had no reason to do so. There hadn’t been any interrogations either and you only got a text when Sam heard about something happening in Dallas and you were needed there.
