Eᴠᴀɴɢᴇʟɪɴᴇ ᴡᴀs ɴɪᴄᴇ. Eᴠᴀɴɢᴇʟɪɴᴇ ᴡᴀs ᴋɪɴᴅ. Evangeline was the blueprint for helpful camp member.
That was all Drew knew about her.
Despite her physical attributes— long, straight pale-white hair, roughly 5'5", with a beauty mark just below her lips on the left–there wasn't much about Evangeline that was public information. She was pretty, but not in an attention grabbing way. She sat with her shoulders tight, and her arms as close to her body as they could be, taking up as little space as possible. If Drew had to guess, her knees would be pressed together under the table, trying not to inconvenience anybody else.
Drew was at dinner now, watching the Hermes table with narrowed eyes.
Earlier, Barry had come up to her, asking about her plans for the day. He'd said something like, "Silena is gone for the week, so I think we should have fun."
"You're so right," Drew had replied, applying a thin layer of lip gloss. "Give me a challenge. Any camper, any cabin."
"Hmmm. Evangeline . . . " he trailed off. "I actually don't know her last name."
Drew pursed her lips. "Come on, Barry. How is she a challenge?"
"Think about it!" Barry leaned up against the vanity, putting his hand perilously close to her open palette. "She's so nice, but she's always alone. No one knows anything about her!"
Drew hummed. "I suppose."
So there she was, sitting and trying to figure out just how to go about doing this.
Evangeline was sitting on the edge of one of the benches at the Hermes cabin. From Drew's observation, it was clear she spent most of her time quietly eating, but would answer any questions asked and would get involved with conversations occasionally.
If she wanted to talk to Evangeline more, they'd have to spend time together. With Silena gone, Drew was acting counselor and . . . that could work.
Drew stood suddenly, and sent a quick wink over to Barry. He grinned back.
The Hermes cabin went quiet as she approached, shooing a Hermes camper out of his seat to sit across from Evangeline. He grumbled but ultimately moved.
"Hi, Drew," Evangeline greeted brightly. "Can I help you with something?"
"Hi Evangeline," Drew responded. "I, uh, noticed you over here, all alone, and wanted to talk."
"Oh!" Evangeline seemed to smile even more bright, straightening in her seat. Her eyes widened in surprise. "That's kind of you!"
"Mmm, yeah. Say, are you a Hermes kid?"
"Oh, my mom's a minor goddess," Evangeline said apologetically. "Philophrosyne. Friendliness and welcome."
Well, things were making a lot of sense now. "If you're not too attached to your cabin, maybe you could join Aphrodite for tomorrow's activities. I'm acting head counselor; I think I've put together a great schedule."
"Oh, I'd love to!" Evangeline clapped her hands together. "What do you have planned?"
"I think we've got archery first, then sword fighting, lunch, and Ancient Greek after, then canoeing and free time. What do you think?" Drew practically draped herself on the table and winked. "If you have anything else in mind, I'm open to suggestions."
Evangeline hummed. "Maybe some arts and crafts? I know that Aphrodite kids make the most beautiful sculptures!"
Drew resisted the urge to gape. This might be harder than she thought.
