Since Daryl has gotten back to Hilltop he has watched everything going on around him. He didn't feel right trying to help out and being in Maggie's way, not after what happened to Glenn because of him. In a way, he was just watching over her, but keeping his distance.

One of the nights the thought of Maggie hating him for what happened to Glenn haunted him all night. But the whispering sound of your voice telling him he was not to blame and nothing could've changed what happened, kept him from throwing knives at the ceiling just to see if they'd fall back and cut him.

However, as the days went on all Daryl could do was hate himself, think about killing Negan, and be frustrated with you. He hates the fact that you are at Sanctuary, even more so that you are with Negan. He knew your mind could've been thinking many things when you agreed to go to Sanctuary, but whether it was to keep Maggie safe or Negan safe, he'll never truly know.

. . .

It doesn't take Simon long to start talking as the truck pulls out of the Sanctuary's gates. However, just like Negan's lecture earlier, you barely listen to what he's saying. You stare out the window for a good portion of the ride.

That is until Simon pokes your knee. You glare up at him and growl; "Don't touch me."

Simon moves his hand away from your knee with a cautious stare. Just to turn back to you with a cheeky smile. "You know," he pauses, "I was there the day Negan took your brother and made that deal with you." You roll your eyes in response. "I noticed you were holding a knife, ready to throw, but you never did."

"My brother stepped in the way of Negan and I would never harm my brother." Your eyes stay from him as thoughts of what happened between you and Andy earlier sounded through your mind. 'Not physically at least, I managed to deeply hurt him emotionally earlier.'

"Andy, right?" You look back over at him.

"He's my brother, yes."

"He was a tough egg to crack when he first got to Sanctuary." Simon's eyes go back to the road. "His want to protect you and the others at Hilltop was strong, but us Saviors have our ways of breaking people-"

"I know." You interrupt with a huff. "I heard about what you all did to him. What you do to everyone like him. It's terrible."

"Life is terrible, (Y/N)." Simon breaths. "What we do to people is vulgar and inhumane."

"If you know it's wrong, why do y'all do it?"

"I don't." Simon clearly states. "I go and torment different groups and stand as Negan's right hand, but I don't take part in that."

'Not all Saviors agree with Negan's methods.' You think as you peer out the window once more. 'We can use that to our advantage when we do fight them.'

. . .

Daryl is sitting upon a picnic table sharpening a blade what the warning sound of metal clashing sounds through Hilltop. The man standing at the top of the wall yells, "The Saviors are coming!" repeating it a couple of times for all to hear.

Daryl truly pays no mind to the warning until Enid runs up to him saying; "We have to get Maggie."

Daryl instinctively asks, "Where is she?" As he stands from the picnic table and follows Enid.

Enid leads him to the blacksmith's hut, where Maggie is helping the blacksmith hide newly made weapons not thinking about herself having to hide.

Enid grabs Maggie's arm; "Come on, Maggie, quickly."

All three of them rush towards the escape tunnel on the other side of Hilltop. They're only halfway there when the trucks start to come through the gate.
