The tape recorder sat on the small round table in the back room of Scoops Ahoy, playing for what felt like the hundredth time.

Steve paced back and forth behind me, eating a banana and listening to the man speak.

"So, what do you think?" Dustin asked Steve, leaning over the table to press pause on the recording.

Dustin sat in a chair pulled closely up to the table and I sat in a chair beside him with my feet propped up on the table.

"It sounded familiar." Steve said, shoving some banana in his mouth.

"What?" Dustin asked.

"The music." Steve said with his mouth full, still pacing. "The music right there at the end."

"That's what you're paying attention to?" I asked, narrowing my eyes at him.

"Why are you listening to the music, Steve?" Dustin snapped. "Listen to the Russian! We're translating Russian!"

"I'm trying to listen to the Russian, but there's music-" Steve started.

"Alright." Robin flew into the back room with her ice cream scooper in hand. "Babysitting time is over. you need to get in there."

We stared at her, all previous conversation falling silent as the nautical music of the ice cream parlour played in the background.

"Hey, my board!" Robin said, pointing to her 'You Rule, You Suck.' Whiteboard that the boys had turned into a Russian alphabet guide.

"That was important data, shitbirds!" She said, turning back to us.

"I guarantee you, what we're doing is way more important than your data." Dustin assured her.

"Yeah?" Robin questioned, raising her eyebrows. "And how do you know these Russians are up to no good, anyways?"

I almost burst out in laughter at my boyfriend's appalled face.

"How does she know about the Russians?" Dustin whispered to Steve and I.

"I don't know." Steve whispered back, throwing his banana peel onto the table.

"You told her about-" Dustin started.

"It wasn't me." Steve defended.

"Hello, I can hear you." Robin said.

"She's not deaf, you idiots. She probably just heard us through the wall. We haven't exactly been quiet. And it's not like that thin drywall is helping either." I offered.

"Finally! Someone with some sense!" Robin said, throwing up her arms with a sigh of relief.

I flashed her a smile, which she returned gladly.

"You all think you have evil Russians plotting against our country, on tape, and you're trying to translate but you haven't figured out a single word because you didn't realize Russians use a entirely different alphabet than we do. Sound about right?" Robin asked with an unimpressed stare.

"You are correct, my friend." I said, glancing over to Dustin and Steve.

This time I laughed, enjoying the stunned faces of my boyfriend and our friend Steve.

What do you think? I think you're an idiot. (Dustin Henderson x Reader)Where stories live. Discover now
