The alarm had been sounding for two minutes without stopping, but the Gladers kept coming to the Box to find out what was happening. They were all making him questions or looking at him for explanations and Newt didn't understand what answer they were expecting to get, considering they all knew the same thing, which was practically nothing. He was also aware that what they were really looking for was comfort and he, as always, was the first one the most sought for reassurance. For all the other Gladers he did not seem to be worried about what was happening and little by little everyone who looked at him sideways began to calm down.
Gally stood next to him and the two of them looked at each other for just a second, which was all they needed to understand what the other was thinking. The eyes of the Keeper of the Builders conveyed the same concern and uncertainty that he felt inside. Not a month had passed since the arrival of the last newbie and the alarm always announced that a new Glader was about to join them. Thomas had only arrived a fortnight ago and changes like this coul have unpredictable consequences.
Newt hated the feeling of being in control and not being in control at the same time. Despite the fact that everyone in the Glade was under his power, nothing that happened in that place and what the creators did could be predicted or controlled, and he detested it.
Although the Box took half an hour to go up, none left their place to continue with the designated work. Everyone was whispering to each other in confusion about what was happening and the anxiety only seemed to increase as time went by.
A thud finally announced that the Box had arrived and the Gladers ran to stand on either side of the gap, desperate to meet the newbie. The doors opened with a metallic screech, lifting a cloud of dust from the surrounding land into the air. A deep silence settled over everyone as they struggled to see inside and hear the desperate cries of the new boy, which always made themselves heard. However, this time, despite the silence, there was not a sound coming out of the Box.
Newt crouched down to get a better view of the inside of the Box. At first he didn't notice anything and scratched his head in confusion: it had never happened before that the alarm sounded to only came up with supplies then. However, within seconds he was finally able to catch a glimpse of the newbie.
With a sudden jerk, Newt pushed himself back into an upright position, his face scrunched up in confusion.
-Holy...-he breathed, looking around at nothing in particular.
By this time, Alby had gotten a good look as well, with a similar reaction.
-No way -he murmured, almost in a trance.
A chorus of questions filled the air as everyone began pushing forward to get a look into the small opening.
-Hold on! -Alby yelled, silencing everyone-. Just hold on!
-Well, what's wrong?-someone yelled back.
Alby stood up.
-Two Newbies less than a month -he said, almost in a whisper-. Now this. Two years, nothing different, now this.
-Why don't you just tell us what the shuck is down there, Alby?-Gally called out. There were more murmurs and another surge forward.
-You shanks shut up! -Alby yelled-. Tell 'em, Newt.
Newt looked down in the Box one more time, then faced the crowd, gravely.
-It's a baby -he announced.
Everyone started talking at once.
A couple of boys led by Gally grabbed some ropes made from ivy vines and lowered Alby and Newt into the Box so they could retrieve the body. A mood of reserved shock had come over most of the Gladers, who were milling about with solemn faces, kicking loose rocks and not saying much at all.
The baby must have been less than two years old and was clearly a boy. It was not common for such young people to come to the Glade, the youngest was Chuck and he could not be less than twelve years old. Newt was concerned about what this change might mean for them and made him wonder if he would be the only baby they would receive; it was definitely not a safe place to raise someone so young.
-Looks like they sent us several boxes of things for the baby... Without a doubt, more than we usually get for ourselves -Alby informed him as Newt leaned over to grab the baby.
-We need the Med-jacks! -the second in command shouted so that those above would hear him and not let either of them go elsewhere to do their work now that the news had passed-. He appears to be breathing but is clearly unconscious -he told Alby-. Perhaps they decided to sleep him due his age -suggested when he saw the worried look the boy gave him.
-It would be too compassionate of them.
They helped carry the baby up and soon everyone was surrounding them and staring at the bridegroom in amazement. Some looked at him suspiciously, as if someone so small could hurt them, and others seemed amazed. Suddenly everyone started asking Newt questions at the same time.
-Is he asleep?
-Why doesn't he wake up?
-Is he breathing?
-Why did they send us a baby?
-How are we going to know his name?
-How are we going to take care of him?
-Who's going to take care of him?
-Shut up, shanks -Alby ordered but some were still too excited to obey him.
-Give him space and let the baby go to the Med-Jacks! -Newt exclaimed when he saw that many were still surrounding them altered and all fell silent as they took two steps back to let them breathe.
Clint and Jeff took a quick look at the baby and motioned for them to follow them to the Homestead. When they got there, Newt, Alby and Gally, who had followed them silently, watched as they went about their work. The second in command glanced at the Keeper of the Builders and was surprised to find that he couldn't recognize the expression on his face. He frowned wondering what could be going through his friend's head but he knew that this was not the time to ask him and that he should wait until they were alone. He was convinced that Gally should not like the presence of the baby very much because of the change it meant and the unpredictable consequences that this could bring. However, there was also something else that he had never seen in him and could not understand.
-From what we can tell with the tools we have and our knowledge, the baby is fine. In cases like these, blood tests are usually done to determine the cause of the fainting but since we cannot do that, the best I can offer you as an answer is that he does not seem to have any health problems-Clint informed them.
- Could it be due to a sedative? -Newt asked them, feeling more relieved to learn that the baby didn't seem to have any health problems; he couldn't explain why but he felt connected to the boy in some way and felt that he had to take care of him with his life.
-It's most likely -Jeff replied-. Probably he will wake up in a couple of hours at most if that's the case, depending on how strong the sedative has been.
-We should keep him under observation with us until he wakes up. We will call you when the greenie opens his eyes, but I do not think you can get many answers from him because of his age -said the Keeper of the Med-jacks.
-They probably haven't even bothered to erase his memory -Newt agreed as he analyzed the baby, feeling reluctant to go away and leave him-. He looks a bit like Gally -he finally said, realizing the resemblance, and looking at his friend.
-It's just a baby -Gally growled and stomped out of the room.
Newt had a feeling that was not what he really thought.
-Alby, don't worry. I will talk to him -he promised when he noted that he was about to speak and recognized the look he always gave him when he was about to ask him to take charge of something-. Take care of him with your lives -he ordered the Med-jacks and with one last look at the baby, he left the room.
