A/N - This chapter is based on the song 'Free' by Rudimental and Emeli Sandé. It's a little bit short, but I hope you all enjoy it.

You had been lingering outside of your apartment for the last half an hour, trying to find some way of softening the blow that you were about to deliver.

The last couple of months, you had been working your tail off, barely making minimum wage and only really getting by on the kindness your nicer customers. It's not like it had been easy, either.

Working through a pandemic was tough, and when the people you were serving were almost all on edge, it made life so much harder.

And then, this afternoon, halfway through a 12 hour shift, your manager had taken you aside and told you that they couldn't afford to keep you on anymore. As if he hadn't been paying you peanuts and working you harder than you could physically keep up with.

It stung, and knowing that you would have to come home and explain to Sam that you had lost your job had left you feeling sick to your stomach. You were supposed to be saving up to buy a house, to get off of the rental market and actually have a place of your own, and now there was another road block in the way.

So, you'd been sitting on the front step of your apartment building, in the cold, for the last thirty minutes, just buying your time until you would have to go in and face the music.

You were just about to give up and go inside when the door creaked open behind you, and Sam came wandering out, pausing when you glanced up at him with a deep frown on your lips.

"Hey," he hummed, coming to slump down beside you and pressing a kiss to your temple. "I was just about to walk round to the shop, thought maybe they had you working late," he told you, watching as your jaw tensed at his comment. Your head was in your hands a moment later, attempting to wipe away the tears before they could properly form. "Y/N?" Sam started again, his hand coming to rest on the small of your back as you held back sobs. "What happened?"

You shook your head slightly, sniffling as you dropped your hands back into your lap. "I got fired," you uttered, your voice thicker than usual. "Effective immediately," you added, finally risking a look in his direction. "I'm sorry, Sam. I really didn't see this coming-"

"What're you apologising for?"

It took a moment for his words to register, and then you were shrugging. "This ruins the plan," you murmured softly.

"Baby, that plan is a rough outline. It doesn't matter if it doesn't happen right away," he told you softly, pulling you into his side and letting your head rest on his shoulders. "That place was overworking you, anyway. And underpaying you. It's their loss." The two of you fell silent for a moment, both just staring out into the street. "You'll find another job; one that you actually like. And it'll all work out," Sam finally hummed, his hand rubbing up your spine.

You took his free hand in yours, playing with his fingers as you took a deep breath.

"It's pretty cold out here," he started again, glancing down at you. "How long've you been out here for?"

You offered up a small shrug. "Long enough that the neighbour probably thought you'd kicked me out," you murmured, hearing Sam let out a snort of laughter. "Pretty sure old Mrs Rubin was hiding behind her curtains watching me," you added.

"Yeah," he hummed out, finally getting to his feet and holding out his hand to help you up. "She can't help herself; she lives for the drama." A small chuckle slipped out of you as he wrapped you up into a proper hug, pressing a kiss into the crook of your neck. "Bet she's still watching now," he teased. "Trying to figure out what's going on and coming up with her own theories. You watch, we'll be the talk of the building by tomorrow morning."

"You joke, but she was the one that told me about the Green's being swingers, and that was completely true," you chuckled as he released you, leading you up to the door.

The two of you made your way up to your apartment in comfortable silence, and once you were behind the privacy of your closed door, your released a deep breath. Money was going to be tight. God, you were probably going to have to dip into the small amount you'd managed to save just to make rent on time. A frown pulled at your lips, your brows furrowing as you tried to think of any way of making a bit of money fast.

"Baby," Sam started, and your head quickly shot up to find him looking at you from the doorway of the kitchen. "It's going to be alright," he told you, watching as your shoulders relaxed slightly. In all honesty, you weren't sure how he managed it, but even a sentence as simple as that was enough to calm your frazzled nerves. You and Sam would figure it out, and sure it wouldn't be easy, but it would be fine.

You nodded slightly, a small smile pulling at your lips. "I know."
