Chapter 51

Marriage.

Why did it have to be marriage?

The rock splintered in front of Ubol. She watched the pieces land in the pond nearby and she gritted her teeth. Crickets chirped at a great volume which only aggravated Ubol more.

The king didn't intend to return her tower and its contents any time soon. After

Perhaps she should just flee. But if she was being chased by the king, there was no doubt all the wizards in the kingdom would go after her under royal orders.

She sank to her knees, her hands wrapped tightly around her staff. The staff was the only thing she had left. What if the king tried to take that away from her as well?

Nothing was going according to plan. At this point, she was even desperate.

The royal siblings were rebelling against the king, weren't they? Maybe... just maybe... she could seek them out and...

"Well, well, it looks like someone is conflicted."

The familiar hiss made Ubol snap her head towards the voice. Niran slithered back out of the grass with his head bobbing in the air. He bared his fangs at the wizard in what seemed to be a smile.

She jumped to her feet and moved to point her staff at him but she stopped herself. He was just a snake. He had no power over her. She slowly lowered the staff and took a deep breath.

"What are you doing here? I didn't call for your name." Ubol narrowed her eyes at the snake.

"I came to see if you wanted to take my offer."

"Again, I didn't call for you."

He hissed. "I don't think you were going to consider it."

"I'm not taking it." Her voice was firm. "I'll find the other royal siblings and help them. I heard the prince was fighting for the throne. Maybe then, I'll be able to get my tower and research back."

"Oh, you don't see the issue with that plan there."

Ubol froze. She looked at the snake and he continued to flick his tongue in and out. "What do you mean?"

"They're the reason why I'm a snake and no longer in the body of a fearsome naga." His mouth was wide and his fangs grew larger. "Those two royals are even worse than the king. There's no surprise that the king wants them dead."

"Even worse than the king?" She echoed.

"Becoming a snake is the worst punishment for a divine being such as I. Wouldn't you agree? If you join me, we can hunt down the royal siblings and force them to change me back. With my full power as a naga, I can even give you your tower back."

Ubol furrowed her eyebrows as she observed the snake's expression. It didn't' seem to be lying but at the same time, she couldn't read snake faces.

It was either get help from the snake or never get the tower back while married to a tyrant.

She lifted her staff over her head and it disappeared in a blink. She crouched down towards the snake and held out her hand towards the snake.

"I accept the deal then."
