-Are you pregnant? -Jeff asked with a pale face and a tone of concern; it was more than clear that the boy was thinking about the medical knowledge he remembered having about pregnancy and on how they would care for her properly there.
Hayleen could feel Newt's gaze on her and had to avoid squirming instead; she didn't want to show him how much the way he looked at her affected her. Knowing that he was watching her only made it more difficult; she was extremely angry and frustrated by the situation but was determined to hide it or not to raise further suspicion.
Although WICKED has forced her to take prenatal vitamins to remedy the consequences the situation with Thomas had finished causing to her body, she knew they were not really necessary. During her first pregnancy she had discovered that due to her privileged DNA and who the father of her baby was to her, she did not need to take anything; in fact, that had also been the reason why her pregnancy had been practically perfect. The only symptoms that had affected her were the occasional (and abrupt) emotional swings, cravings, and an exponential increase in libido. The latter, without a doubt, had been the only one which had really bothered her.
Hayleen had found herself fantasizing at all hours of the day about someone she never expected to see again. It was really very frustrating for her because the least she wanted was to think about the father of her baby; Although she desperately wanted to, forgetting him was mission impossible for her. She wanted him so badly that sometimes she wanted to rip her skin out of sexual frustration. The nights were undoubtedly the hardest; during the day she could find a distraction more easily and her mother was always trying to get her out of her mind but, when the moon appeared and she was in bed with only the darkness of the night, she couldn't help but be invaded by unwanted thoughts. There were countless nights that she ended up crying herself to sleep and many more were those that were haunted by the memory of her first time.
Even when she had felt that she reached the limit of what she could bear and made up her mind to try to end her suffering, she did not succeed. It was one of those many nights when she was tortured by the memory of how Gally had felt inside her when she finally slipped one of her hands into her wet panties and touched herself. Even though she had never done it, because she had never felt the need to do it and it didn't feel right, she had reached a point where she was desperate enough to ignore it and forget about her determination not to hit her body what it wanted with respect to her soulmates; to her thinking of Gally as she did so felt like letting him win. However, she found no relief from touching herself; she felt horrible and her whole body seemed to be punishing her, screaming at her that was not what she needed. If Hayleen already hated her body before that, then she found out that she could hate it even more than she already did.
Definitely what terrified her the most about being pregnant again, were the high chances she had of going through that one more time. It would be even more difficult now that she was so close to all of them and she didn't need her raging hormones making everything worse.
-It can't be many weeks, physically there is nothing that shows a pregnancy –said Clint looking at her analytically.
-Are you pregnant? -the other Med-jack finally asked her while still looking like he was going through an existential crisis.
Lyn thought of the best way to proceed in this situation. Initially she had thought that she would not have the need to face this issue but WICKED had taken care that the Gladers had the possibility of discovering it; she had no doubt that they had done it on purpose. Although she could try to deny everything, she didn't seem to be easily believed and a part of her thought that perhaps their knowing about her pregnancy would help keep them away.
-Yes -she finished answering doubtfully-. I think so -she added, pretending to be confused, realizing that she shouldn't be able to remember.
-What are we going to do Clint? –asked the boy, passing his hand over his face and sighing.
-From what I remember, we do not have many of the things that are usually used to control pregnancies... but in ancient times none of that existed and even so, babies were born successfully -he answered, frowning and running his hand through his hair while he was trying to remember something that might help them.
-Yes, and most mothers died in childbirth! -Jeff replied excitedly.
-Could you not mention it in front of our patient? –he whispered annoyedly to his friend, trying not to make her listen but without success.
-Everything will be fine -Newt finally intervened; apparently deciding that it was time to stop looking at her to calm the flustered Med-jacks-. We may not have much to deal with pregnant women but I trust you. I know you will do the best with what we have -he added and, with just a few words from him, the Med-jacks seemed to have tranquilized-. Also, Thomas and Minho are closer than ever to finding a way out of here. I have no doubt that we will get out before we have to worry about this.
-He's right -Clint told the other Med-jack-. As always –he said laughing-. Why don't you take a break? We'll bring you food when it's ready -he added, approaching her and forcing her to lie down next to Seth.
-If the Med-jacks confirm everything is fine with you, tomorrow we will show you the place well. We always throw a welcome party for the new Greenie the night he arrives. Obviously that will have to wait until tomorrow too -Newt informed her with a sweet smile; despite that, Hayleen could see the darkness hidden in his eyes and how he was fighting his instincts-. Let me know if something happens -he ordered the Med-jacks in a way that really made it look like a request even if it wasn't.
Lyn couldn't help but watch him leave the room. A part of her wanted him to stay and it was clear he didn't want to leave because of the way he headed for the door. Luckily for her, Newt left the room and saved her from continuing to fight with herself.
She turned around and hugged Seth. Despite having slept for hours, she felt her eyes closing from the dream she had. Knowing that they would wake her to eat now that they knew she was pregnant and had to eat for two, she decided to lose herself a little longer in the darkness of unconsciousness.
