~Chapter 3~
"J.A.R.V.I.S. locate heat signatures in remote parts of the eastern region of Hati" Tony said settling into his chair
Hadley raised a brow
"Yes sir" a British voice replied, "and shall I chart a course as well?"
"Yeah thanks buddy" Tony replied
"I thought we were taking one of S.H.I.E.LD.'s planes" Hadley said
"I changed my mind" Tony replied, looking at her
Hadley nodded quietly and leaned back in her chair, looking out the window
"And does Fury know about your decision?"
"Fury doesn't own me" Tony replied
Hadley sighed "alright"
She relaxed and stared out the window
Tony watched her quietly, his head tilted slightly to the side
He didn't know why he couldn't take his eyes off of her.. there was just something about her that made him want to stare... Made him want to know her.
He didn't understand it.
"Are you going to keep staring at me the entire trip?" Hadley asked, looking at him
Tony flushed for a brief moment then collected himself
"No. Sorry I was thinking" He said, looking away
"Okay" she said quietly, looking back out the window
"So... Fury wants you to join the Avengers?" Tony asked, earning her attention again
"I suppose so" she said, "but I don't know... I'm better off alone"
"Well no one is really better alone. I don't want to sound like a kids' show but friends do help" Tony said
"I can't have friends... Too much at stake.." she said, keeping her eyes trained out the window
"That seems like an awful way to live"
"You get used to it.."
"Hm."
Tony watched her more, she seemed almost... He didn't even know the word... Like she was... Broken.
He didn't like that.
He was usually able to fix things. Was she fixable?
Hadley shifted a little, glancing at him. Why did he keep staring?
"Tell me about yourself" he said
She looked at him "why?"
"Because I want to know the person I'm working with. Plus it's an hour trip and there's not much else to do than talk" Tony replied, "where are you from?"
Hadley stared at him silently for a moment before sighing deeply. "I was born in D.C. but my mom and I moved all over the place... I mostly grew up in larger cities... LA... New York... Places like that.." she said, leaning on her hand
"Really? I grew up in Manhattan, then I moved out to Malibu" Tony said, looking at her
"Cool" Hadley said, leaning back
Tony nodded
"Okay" Hadley said, looking back out the window
"Man you are really against this" Tony said, "You can't just be friendly?"
"I can. I just choose not to"
"But why?"
"Because I can't have friends. I told you that. This is not to make friends. It's a mission. To save lives." She said, sitting up
Tony fell silent
Hadley watched him for a moment before looking back out the window
~
After about an hour, Tony's jet touched down in an empty field in Hati
Hadley stood, looking around the jet before dawning her mask and leaving the jet.
Tony watched her before following.
As he walked through the front part of the yet, robotic arms worked to put on the different parts of his suit
Once his suit was on, Tony exited the jet, joining Hadley on the ground as Ironman.
Hadley looked at him and raised a brow, slightly impressed by the suit but she said nothing
"Do you fly? Is that something you do?" Tony asked, looking at her
"Um sort of but not-"
"Okay" he grabbed her
"Wh-What are you doing??"
"Might want to hold on" Tony replied, picking her up bridal style before blasting off
Hadley shrieked and grabbed onto him tightly, holding onto him
"J.A.R.V.I.S. found heat signatures in an old warehouse a couple miles from here, 15 of them. Fury said 13 people had been taken" Tony explained as they flew
"O-Okay" she said, looking up at him then around the landscape zooming by
"What, are you scared?" Tony asked, sounding slightly amused
"No!"
"Well don't be, the suit has an extremely good grip." Tony said, "there it is"
He nodded to a building not far from them
Within seconds, Tony was touching down next to it.
"Let's do this" he said, walking up to it
"Let's.." Hadley replied with a nod.
