I am very tired of seeing books where the characters are described one way and portrayed another. If you say your character is brave or smart, stick with it and don't portray them as the opposite.

And if you cant be consistent about things like that, show their personality instead of telling it. Showing is a lot better most of the time, anyway. You don't have to say a character is brave in order to show it. Show it by having them step in front of another character in the midst of danger. That also shows protectiveness, friendship, and sometimes love.
