I awoke with a jolt as something in my dream told me to wake up; my room was dark and I instantly got the feeling that I woke up much earlier than I had needed to. I felt around for my phone in the dark, tiredly pulling it toward me before checking the time. To my surprise, I had woken up only one minute before my alarm was set to go off.

I scrambled to turn my alarm off before it could possibly blare because the sound my phone made every morning was the last thing I wanted to hear right now. Once I had turned my alarm off, I checked my notifications. Usually, I'd have maybe two late-night notifications but I was currently being faced with numerous texts from friends and family wishing me a happy birthday.

Being reminded what day it was, I groaned grumpily and pulled my blanket over my head after tossing my phone to the side. I wasn't sure how I had misplaced the knowledge that it was my birthday, but I already envied my moments of bliss.

As per tradition, Sam had spent the night after a small celebration had commenced between her, my dad, and me. She'd been doing that since I was about eleven and I wasn't looking forward to the year that the tradition might cease.

The night before had consisted of my dad and Sam urging me to stay up until midnight so that they could be the firsts to tell me happy birthday and we had all eaten some brownies that my dad had made earlier in the evening. Calum had called me right around midnight to talk, which had been sweet.

I was surprised to see that he had sent me a text as well.

hopefully you'll see this in the morning ;) but i just wanted to say happy birthday again. i can't wait to see you. a day of celebrating you is something i'm looking forward to because you're pretty magnificent, jacobson. keep up the good work :))

I couldn't help but smile at the message. It should have been a crime how easy it was for Calum to make me feel happy. It was almost annoying. Almost.

"Good morning, sunshine!" Scaring me half to death, my dad and Sam barged into my room. My dad was caring a tray of breakfast while Sam was carrying two wrapped gifts. "Turn that frown upside down, pumpkin," Dad said, placing the tray above my lap as he took a seat on the edge of my bed.

"Thank you, Dad—it looks delicious," I spoke nicely as I stared down at the stack of pancakes, wanting to reveal how grateful I was. "What's this?" I asked Sam as she handed me the two gifts.

"Just some empty cardboard boxes," she replied with a shrug. My eyes playfully rolled and I watched as a smile crept onto her face. "Open them, would you? This one's from me and the other is from your dad."

I opened Sam's gift first and couldn't help but laugh as I pulled out a sweatshirt with George Costanza's face on it. I sent Sam a look and she smiled proudly.
