When I awoke, I was laying in the comfort of a bed, soft music playing in the background. It was nice to wake like this, although I missed Dal jumping on me, forcing me to get up.
Unexpectedly, nobody had gotten up yet. It was quiet, something nice for a change. Gently walking down to the floor, I spotted two staff members, both circles. They stood at each side of the big door, not doing anything but standing there to watch over us.
Sitting against the leg of one of them, I began to speak. Maybe it was annoying, but as I said, a new goal, why not have a go right?
"Hiya, how are you today?" Knowing full well they wouldn't talk back, I continued anyway, "If you were a flower, I'd say you would be Echinacea,"
"So, do you have to stand here all day? " I laughed as the second pink member slightly turned their head to peek in my direction. They were quick to turn back. "My feet would hurt. Props to you." I babbled on like a child talking about their daily activities.
I watched with them as the other players got up and stretched their legs, the other members started waking up to move around and talk with the others. What a bonding experience this has become. Continuing on with my one-sided conversation took all worry from my system
While talking to myself as far as one could tell, I hadn't noticed a body had snuck up on me "What are you doing?"
"Hello Ari, I thought you didn't want to be here anymore?" I gave her my biggest smile.
"Well, I didn't but on the other hand I didn't want you to be alone." She stood there looking between me and the pink man holding a gun behind me.
She was nervous to speak but got it out anyway, "So uh...what were you doing?"
"Talking to my best friend, what are you doing?" I stated.
"Won't that annoy them and..well, bang?" I chuckled at her choice of words, shaking my head. He would have kicked me, shot me or done something by now. I pat the leg behind me and look up, knowing I had his attention already.
"If I annoy you, point your gun at me."
Nothing. Thought so.
"Sometimes we need a friend, and by the looks of them, the day can get boring real quick." I shrugged, Ari sat in front of me, wide eyes and rose-coloured cheeks. Such a cutie that one."You have a big heart" she was soft and precious.
"I would like to think so, too much bad in the world. If I can make someone smile even for a second I think I did my job right" the PA voice came through, putting a stop to our conversation.
"Attention, your meal time begins now, all players please form a line at the centre of the room."
Everyone was forming a line quicker than expected. Guess they were hungry too. Ari grabbed my hand pulling me into line and stepping forward little by little. Second, in line, I saw they were handing out lunches in a tin and water bottles. Once I grabbed mine I said my thank you and went to sit with Ari.
"Mm, it looks so good!" She was pleased with the lunch in front of her.
"Hey Ari, what's your favourite food?"
She gulped down a spork full of rice before speaking, covering her mouth with her tiny hands so as not to be rude or awkward.
"Does ice cream count?" She couldn't be any sweeter, her smile was something to fight for. She could as well be the one innocent thing in this room.
"Of course it does!"
The water fell to the back of my throat, rushing over my tongue and cooling the heat I didn't realise was there. It's amazing the things we look over in our day-to-day lives.I began to fiddle with the clean napkin that had come with the tinned food. If I remembered properly daddy showed me how to make a rose. He was the whole reason I wanted to work with plants and such.
It took a while and it came out a little funny, if I closed my eyes it reminds me of the roses he would get my Mama.We had an hour or 2 of free talk time before it was lights out. Ari was an interesting person, her stories held so much love for the people in them. I was afraid to tell her mine, they weren't that happy and she was too much of a beautiful soul to know the burdens I carry.
All in all, it was a struggle to get to sleep, the man next to my bed was snoring like a mad man, and some others were also snoring but not as bad as this one. It slightly echoed through the room, which annoyed me a tenfold.
Slowly creeping down to the floor, I looked at Ari's bed to see she passed out with a pillow covering both ears. Ha, what a way to go."Please let me in! I REALLY NEED TO PEE" I heard someone lightly shout at a side door. How people slept through or ignored this is beyond me. I had ignored it at first but for some reason, my brain 'zoomed' into the sound like one would with a mosquito or a fly in the tent. I did make my way over to her to figure out her issue.
"I will do it, I will do it right here, be prepared to hear the waterfall"
I really didn't want to watch this so I stepped in. "Wait, wait, wait, stop" she eyeballed me, glaring daggers as she slowly stood up, if I wasn't careful she looked like she could jump me.
I knocked on the door, and the small circular window opened. "Hello, would it be alright if I were to use the restroom?"
The window shut, and there was silence
"What did you thi-"
The door opened and the pink soldier stepped aside. I smirked at her, but she just scoffed and pushed me aside. She stopped and looked at pinky. "Dick" she continued walking down to the next door where another person stood outside."Sorry?" I felt the need to apologise for her overreacting outburst but it was funny how he reacted. No words, but the move to make her wait just that little longer.
The bathroom was quite large, it seemed to be both female and male so I guess it makes things easier.
I did my business and washed my hands but I didn't want to go back out. My stomach flipped over and over, for no reason at all. This was normal some nights. The smell of cigarette smoke drifted over to where I was placed in front of the mirror. I thought it is best to tell her so she wasn't caught.
"I can smell it from over here."
"Oh shut up!" She was loud for someone who wanted to be secretive, I wonder if what she said about her child was true.
"Just letting you know."Going to bed I eventually went to sleep, waking up to the sound of classic jazz music, my mouth felt dry and my eyes hurt so much it caused a headache of its own.
"Attention, it is now time for breakfast. All players please form a line in the centre of the room"
Another day, another game, another life lost.
