THOMAS POV
I lay in the hospital bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. What had happened there? And where was Jen? I heard Dylan's voice down the corridor. I swung my legs off the bed, and made my way over. I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. I tried again, with the same failure.
"Can't speak?" Dylan asked, concern evident in his voice. I nodded, and pointed at the wheelchair, supporting a sleeping Jen. "Yeah, well she's paralysed. Haven't seen Aeden though." I shook my head. I knew where he was, I saw him being carried into the operation room. Dylan handed me a pen and paper.
I wrote down "Operation Room. Aeden." And Dylan had gone running in a second. I slowly trailed behind him, pushing Jen along. Her eyes opened soon after, and she turned, her eyes meeting mine. I wrote down "Can't speak. Using this to communicate. Doctors say it's temporary. Your condition is as well."
She nodded as she assessed the whole situation, and said, "Well, you probably know I'm paralysed from the shoulders, so even though I want to hug you so badly, I can't. I'm sorry Thomas, I can no longer move. And by the time I can..." Her voice cracked as she finished her words, and tears slowly streamed down her cheeks.
"I can't do this," she whispered as I knelt down to give her a hug instead. "I can't. Thomas, I have to do this, but you have to understand, it's for the greater good." She wiped her tears away, and regained composure. "We...need to break up. Please understand. You will be in greater pain if I don't do this."
"I had visions, alright? Of the future. I know how it will turn out. Thomas, trust me. It's for the best." And then, she wheeled herself off after Aeden, leaving me to wonder what horrible visions could ever make her say that.
I was regaining my voice slowly, but I haven't had reason to speak to anyone. Jen had been keeping a distance from me, and I haven't tried to talk to her yet. I didn't know what visions she was talking about. Until one day I got them as well.
I was just discharged from hospital, and I headed straight to my room for a nap. Then they came. The visions. "She didn't make it Thomas," Dylan was saying, "She died saving you. She jumped on front..." I cut him off.
"I know what happened slinthead! It's my fault. All my fault. If I hadn't suggested to go and save her at the castle...she would be fine." I could see that the other two was holding back tears, and my own slid down my face. What had started with soft crying turned into desperate sobbing and screaming.
I knew that Aeden and Dylan felt the same. Normally they would tell me to slim it and call me a shank, but now they just put their hands on my shoulder and guided me out.
And as I turned to get a last glimpse of her through the window, I could swear that I saw shadow sweep past.
I thought it was the worst nightmare they could give me, but it wasn't. It just got worse.
"Thomas, I love it." She was whispering. "Where'd you get all the money to prepare this?" I smirked. "Well...my parents contributed...a bit... Ok. They paid ok?" But she still kept that smile.
"Thomas, that's sweet!" She screamed as she propelled herself into my arms, and it was perfect. That moment, us, everything. But it was a nightmare disguised as a daydream.
I let her off to wonder the place, while I grabbed some drinks for us. But when she didn't come back for a long time, I began to get suspicious.
"Jen?" I called all around the place, until a scream sounded from the room I just passed. Her scream. I burst the door open, and she had her hands on her stomach, she removed them, and they were sticky. It was hard to see in the dark, but the glisten of red told me it was blood. Her blood.
I dove behind her, and she landed, her body limp and drained of all colour, on my hands. Her white blouse was stained red, but her chest rose and fell, however weak. A vein slowly pulsed in her neck. She was alive. Not for long. I screamed. "Jen! Jen, you can pull through this... I'll bring you back I promise." She returned a smile weakly.
"Bye Thomas. It was nice meeting you." Then, her eyes rolled back, and her chest fell, never to rise again.
I wanted to wake up, to stop this terrifying future visions. But it never stopped. As I sat up from bed, I soon realised that reality wasn't any better as the door burst open, and Aeden grabbed my hand, dragging me out without any explanation whatsoever. I could hear gunshots. Screams. More gunshots. "Aeden what's happening?" I yelled over the screams. "Explain later. Now run!" He let go of my hand and broke off into a sprint. I followed after him, but where was Jen? But I kept the question in until we arrived at a metal door. He pushed it open, to reveal 3 people that I was more than happy to see.
Jen, Dylan, and Lynn. Dylan and Lynn hadn't left Dauntless compounds since the gas incident. Tris told me that they would return to return to Amity after this chaos. "Okay...so Aeden, I need an explanation. What is the meaning of this? Why the gunshots?"
He shook his head, and his only reply was "Divergents."
