Chapter Sixteen

"I can see you're-" Levi paused, looking away then cleared his throat "-in an important meeting"

He turned, facing the door and spoke once more

"I'll come back tomorrow" he mumbled before leaving

Erwin and I stared at the door as it shut, continuing to keep our eyes on it until we knew Levi had walked away

"Oh, bosdespa" I mumbled under my breath

I got up from on top of Erwin, standing on the cold wood floors, my eyes still fixated on the door. I could only see the look Levi gave me; It reminded me of the look he had when Erwin was first injured.

He must have felt that we betrayed him.

"Well, that was a mood killer" Erwin chuckled, stretching his arm above his head

"Yea" I sighed, picking up my clothes from the floor

I felt Erwin's eyes watch me as I put my slip back on and tied my bustier over it

"I'm sorry you didn't finish" I said as I slipped on my blouse

"I'm okay" Erwin smiled "I'm just glad you did"

"Thank you" I pressed my lips together and gave a small smile

I put on my dress and laced up bodice, taking in a deep sigh. I felt bad for hurting Levi yet again. I didn't know what I should do: if I should go to him or just leave him be.

"We probably should have locked the door" Erwin sighed

I could only lightly giggle as I picked up my apron and tied it around my waist. I felt so ashamed, I could barely pay attention.

I turned back to Erwin with a smile then reached into my apron pocket. And that's when I felt the badge.

My Miche's badge.

My eyes widened upon realization. I felt my breath begin to tremble as I stared off in the distance, my eyes began to burn with salty tears.

How could I? How could I do such a thing? And so soon after my Miche's passing.

"I should go" I mumbled, trying to fight back tears, sliding on my shoes

"Are you okay, my dear?" Erwin lifted himself up from the bed, looking at me with concern

"I'm okay" I reassured, facing the door, my hand on the knob "I should get to my room. I have to be up early tomorrow since you're fully recovered"

"You could stay here" Erwin offered

"No, no, it's okay" I turned away from him, placing my hand on the door handle "I'll see you tomorrow"

I stepped out and closed the door, leaning up against it. My breath was shaking as I inhaled, trying to fight back my tears and immense guilt.

But I couldn't hold it in.

I darted away from the door, trying to make it to my room as fast as I could without anyone seeing. As I walked down the halls, I tried not to think of what had just happened, I knew I would break down if I did. I needed the solace of my room.

I looked up, making sure no one else was in the corridors when I saw Levi in the halls. Oh bosdespa, of all people to see: another one I betrayed.

A look of concern drew on Levi's face. He must have noticed my saddened demeanor.

"Mari?" Levi called to me as I passed

But I couldn't acknowledge him. Instead I just kept walking, trying my best to cover my face and my tears.
