Chapter Eighteen

The past week had been quite busy at the headquarters. I hadn't seen much of Erwin nor Levi, only in passing, since I've come back from what was supposed to be my vacation.

As Levi ordered, I immediately headed back to the headquarters near Karanes and got as far away from Trost. The whole place was empty when I got in. I was there for three days before any scouts showed up, which was helpful at least; I passed the time by with cleaning and writing in my new journal.

But now that their back, I had to return to my usual routine.

I had finished cleaning the offices and higher ranks bedrooms and had just washed all the sheets, stuffing them into a wicker basket to take outside. I propped the basket on my hip and walked towards the hallways to the courtyard.

As I walked, more Scouts passed me with a friendly nod, I giving the same cordial response. There were a few new recruits I had never really seen before. Then again, I had only really ever talked to the high ranks and those three little goofballs.

From across the way, near the outside doors, I noticed someone, who although was sometimes a thorn in my side was a friendly face I had grown to miss.

"Hange!" I called to them

Hange turned to me, a smile on their face when they noticed it was me. They ran to me, us meeting halfway in the hall.

"Mariana" Hange sighed "You're okay"

"Yea, I'm okay" I smiled with a giggle "why wouldn't I be?"

"The way the past week has been-" Hange took off their glasses and cleaned them "-I was afraid the MPs were gathering everyone who associated with the Scouts"

"The MPs?" I questioned "What happened?"

"Erwin didn't tell you?" Hange raised their brow "I'm suprised"

"I haven't really had time to talk to him" I shrugged "What happened?"

"It's a lot" Hange warned "but I think I can sum it up"

Hange smiled, nodding towards the end of the hall, prompting me to walk with them towards the courtyard.

"I haven't been able to talk to you like this since before I informed you about Miche's passing" Hange continued "So a lot has happened since then"

"I've got time" I giggled, nodding to the basket of clothes I was carrying

"There was a pastor here who knew about the walls: being made from titans and stuff. But he wouldn't talk"

"I think I saw him the night before Erwin and I traveled to Stohess. Before you told me about Miche's death" I began to ponder

"Yes, that's him" Hange nodded "But before we could get any information, he was murdered-"

Hange sighed with disappointment then continued

"-That happened after Levi and his squad left. They had to go into hiding"

"Hiding?" I questioned

"Because of Historia: the small blonde girl" Hange continued as we walked out into the courtyard "The MPs were trying to find her and Eren"

As I hung the clothes out on the line to dry, Hange explained every detail to me: The MPs cover-up, Erwin's arrest and later coup, how Kenny was working for the royals, and this Reiss guys titan transformation. All happening within a week and a half.

"And now" Hange sighed, handing me another clothes pin "Historia will be crowned queen"

"When will that be?" I asked
