Curled up in the back I listened as Dr. Green complained about going into work and how he didn’t like any of the kids besides me. My eyes wondered the car and I slowly glanced out the window. Dark clouds were rolling in and I could feel the shiver of the air preparing for the rain. Resting my head on the window I closed my eyes feeling cozy in the warmth of the back seat.
“Ms. Sorenson?” I quickly opened my eyes meeting Mr. Blackbourne’s in the rear view mirror giving him a quick smile to show that I was okay. He smiled softly.
“When you get out from school today you are headed over to Victor’s house again. His parents are not home so there is no need to worry. Just try and relax and get as much sleep as possible.” I smiled thinking of Victor and quickly pulled out my phone.
Sang: I am going to your house tonight. :)
I pressed send and rested my head once more on the window when a message popped up onto my screen.
Victor: You might not be able to Sang. I am not feeling to great this morning.
My eyes widened in shock at the text message and instantly I shifted in my seat leaning forward so that Dr. Green could see it. His eyes widened in response as well and glanced to Mr. Blackbourne.
“Owen, Victor says he isn’t feeling well.” Surprised Mr. Blackbourne removed his phone from his pocket and handed it to Dr. Green who pressed a button before putting the phone on speaker. Hearing the ring of the phone I shifted nervously hoping that Victor was okay.
“Mr. Blackbourne…” Victor answered but it almost sounded like another person I could just barely make out his lovely baritone voice. My hands fidgeted in my lap in worry now.
“Victor how are you feeling?” Dr. Green responded. “We saw your message to Pookie.” He warned and shifted the phone a little so that I can respond.
“Victor?” I asked and I heard shifting on the phone and then the honk of a car horn. My eyes widened in surprise. “Victor if you aren’t feeling well you shouldn’t come to school!” I warned and Dr. Green brought the phone back to his lap quickly.
“I am okay.” I heard him cough and shifted forward in my seat my arms resting on the shoulders of Dr. Green’s chair.
“Doc he isn’t okay.” Gabriel responded and I bit my lip nervously. “He is coughing a lot and his voice is down the tubes. I think he has a fever but I can’t tell.”
Mr. Blackbourne cut in. “Mr. Coleman take him to the nurses office right when we get to school-“
“Owen I am going to the hospital first today.” Dr. Green reminded and I shifted forward as I caught Mr. Blackbourne’s worried look.
“I can do it.” I responded and the two glanced back at me. “Please you know I can. He sounds like he has a basic cold.”
“Sang I don’t want you to get sick.” Victor’s scratchy voice stated over the phone and I could hear coughing in the background.
