The mage looked at me through thick, black-rimmed glasses. I felt his magic drip away from me like little water droplets after a shower. His magic was cold, causing goosebumps to prickle on my skin.
He looked ordinary enough, but the moment he walked through my door, Kyler went on alert. The man wasn't an ordinary mage. And the more I felt his power, the more I realized what he was.
He worked in death magic.
Which was great if I wanted to know why I wasn't dead. And hell, I had a power to raise dead people. So who was I to judge for the type of magic someone used?
Though he killed people and animals for his powers. For him to do what he was doing for me, I didn't want to know what lost their life.
"I have good news and bad news," he said. "The good news is that your heart is still beating."
I lifted my hand and felt for a pulse at my neck. I figured that I would have noticed the moment my heart started beating again, but maybe I'd missed it? Though the longer I sat there, feeling for even a faint thump beneath my skin, I realized that I didn't miss anything.
"The bad news is, your heart is no longer in your body." He delivered the news like a doctor delivering the news of cancer for the third time that day. It was quick and to the point, and he gave me time to process.
"What," I asked.
He smiled slightly, a pitying look in his eye. "I looked into your memories as well, to see what exactly transpired. It looks as if your sire has the ability to extract hearts out of people, while still allowing the owner of the heart to live as long as he allows the heart to continue beating."
My eyes flew to my mom, who was suddenly pale. I hadn't wanted her to know who had a part in this. I wanted her to be blissfully unaware until everything was taken care of, yet it seemed the moment the word sire came out of the mage's lips, she knew exactly who it was that took my heart.
"Her...sire?" My mom's voice was strangled.
The mage nodded. "Yes. Or as non-vampires call it, her father."
I didn't think it was possible, but she became paler to the point where she looked somewhat green.
If she thought she was still in love with him before, I doubted she thought so anymore.
"But good news," the mage chirped. "Even if he completely obliterates your heart, you'll simply turn into a full vampire."
That didn't make any sense. A vampire dies after their heart is obliterated. If Vincenzo or Alaric decided to destroy my heart, how the hell would I continue to live as a vampire?
I didn't even have to ask. I guess my face gave it away.
"You're an insanely powerful necromancer," he said, obviously becoming excited. "So much so that all of your kind hate you. And to add salt to their wounds, since losing your heart, you've become more powerful. One hundred and sixteen percent more powerful, to be exact. It's truly an honor to even be invited into your home. You have no idea how long it took me to find something to wear. Normally I'd even require payment for my services, but it's just so much of an honor to meet you that I'm doing it for free. The things you and I could do together-"
The other three men's heads turned so that they could stare at him, even as I raised a hand to stop him. He didn't realize the murderous looks the other three paranormals were giving him. His eyes were glued to me like I was the coolest thing since sliced bread.
I crossed my arms. "I'm not interested in what you and I can do together. Nor do I want a favor from you just because you're some sort of fanboy. What you just said still doesn't make sense."
He blinked, unphased by my words. "Because you would live simply because your powers would force you to. You could live forever, if you wanted to, even with your heart in your chest."
When I didn't say anything, he raised his hand and made a fist in the air. "Your heart has never really been a major part of your system. Being half vampire, half necromancer, the only thing really forcing your heart to beat was that necromancer part of you. You are probably the only person in the world who does not need a heart to live, simply because you are that powerful."
I understood what he was getting at, but I still didn't get how my heart wasn't actually a vital part of my system.
He opened his fist. "Now say your heart is obliterated. No more. Your necromancy powers, plus the vampire blood in your veins, would keep you going. You're practically invincible."
I did not like the sound of that at all. I didn't need my heart? After all these years, I was suddenly being told I didn't need my heart to be in my chest, or beating, for me to continue to survive. It made a cold sort of fear shoot up my back.
I looked at my mom, who still looked green. I doubted she heard any of what was just said, which was probably for the best. The mage gave her a lot more to think about than he even knew.
I wondered if he knew she was my mom, and he basically just admitted that the man she thought she was in love with, was nothing but trash. Trash that took her daughter's heart from her chest and was probably keeping it like some sort of momento.
Good to know psychopath ran in my veins.
"And how do I find my heart?" I tore my eyes away from my mom, who was staring blankly at the floor. She looked like she was seconds away from throwing up. I would have moved her, or had one of the guys take her to the guest bedroom to lay down, but she was so inside her own head that it would probably scare her, rather than help her.
The mage shrugged. "I'm able to track it. But it requires a lot of...preparation."
Meaning he had to kill a lot of people or animals to gain enough power to track it down. It didn't look like he was against it, but the look on my face told him I wasn't so keen on others losing their lives just so that I can find a piece of my body that wasn't necessarily vital to my well-being.
He stood. "If you change your mind, Scarlett knows how to contact me."
I nodded and stood with him to walk him to the door. Not out of kindness. More because I wanted to make sure he didn't leave anything behind...
Like a camera. Or an audio feed. Or anything he could fanboy over later.
He allowed me to walk him to my door. When he opened it, he turned and looked back at me.
"One last thing." He gave me a wry smile. "I looked into your memories, as I said. But you need to be careful of Vincenzo. It's probably for the better that you can't remember anything past the point of you passing out. He's power hungry, and you're powerful. Just keep an eye out. And remember, if you want me to find your heart, all you need to do is ask and I'll be ready within the next twenty four hours."
With that, he walked out to his car, never once looking back.
