Chapter Nineteen

The sun began to shine in my room, the early morning birds singing in the distance. I barely opened my eyes, seeing the specks of dust shining like diamonds in the rays.

I looked over to the other side, the side closest to my desk, seeing Levi had already left. Yet, as the breeze passed by me from the windows, I could still smell his scent on my sheets and skin.

He smelt like smoked sage and a touch of lemon: a very clean scent. I almost found myself snuggling against the pillow he laid on, just to take in more.

But I couldn't. I needed to control myself and not allow it happen or go any further than what it was.

I got up, doing my usual morning routine and headed downstairs to the kitchen. Thankfully for me, the scouts were to cook breakfast that morning, so getting up so late wasn't that big of a deal. But I still had lunch to cook for the higher ranks. 

Lunch wasn't anything too special, but instead of the usual soup, I roasted some root vegetables from the garden. The one thing I loved about this HQ within Wall Rose was that it had a garden.

Now that my Miche and his squad were gone, I had Connie, Sasha and Pony Boy tend to it. I couldn't let the last thing I had of Miche die along with him. I wouldn't allow it.

I served most of the higher ranks their lunch, then headed back into the kitchen to set up the two trays for Erwin and Levi's afternoon tea.

As I prepped each tray,, I head the swinging doors open to see a Scout, he walking up to me and handing me a note. I immediately opened it, wanting to see what was inside.

"My dearest Mariana,

I request no lunch or tea this afternoon. Instead, I long to have your by my side. Your presence alone is enough to feed any hunger I may need. Just having you around me makes my heart full.

With all my love,

Erwin Smith"

He had such a way with words, making me almost fidget with anticipation. Erwin had a habit of sending me love letters daily, and every note he'd send me made me feel warm.

After getting the loads of dishes done, I headed up to Erwin's office, passing hallways and corridors on my way there.

I reached his door and held my hand up to knock. I paused for just a moment, my stomach feeling like it was fluttering. Should I let Erwin know what Levi and I did?

No, that would be a terrible idea. Besides, what happened between Levi and I was a one time thing. It would never happen again.

I knocked on the door, hearing Erwin's baritone smooth voice calling me in.

I opened the door, peeking in to see Erwin at the desk. The curtains were closed, oil lanterns dimly lighting the room. He looked at me with a smile, so warm and endearing, making my stomach feel like it was tied in nervous knots.

"Good morning, my dear" Erwin called to me as I closed the door, stepping in closer

"Good morning" I answered as I walked up to his desk "Would you like me to open the curtains?"

"No, leave them closed" Erwin turned to them then back to me "I noticed the sun gets in your eyes when you come in the mornings. I didn't want it to bother you"

"How kind" I murmured, walking around the desk and closer to him

Erwin turned in his chair, facing me and placed his hand on my hip, pulling me in closer. His head rested on my stomach, he drawing me in for a hug as I rubbed his shoulders.
