Chapter Fifty-Five - Mabel Mallory

*Theodore*

After we had all trickled back into the house, we had all disappeared and gone our separate ways. Besides that small pitstop to stare incredulously at a group of teenagers dancing on the dancefloor, Genevieve had happily and swiftly reclaimed our spot by the windows. Shoving out a few smaller groups of people that had sat down in our absence, making sure to push them out as gently as she could.

After a few minutes, we had completely settled back into our seats, Gen's legs resting on top of my lap as we both looked out at the loud and boisterous music that continued to pound through the house. It was so loud that it seemed as though the lights and hanging plants were shaking ever so slightly, not that any human would notice something so minute.

"Do you think that my plant is going to drop?" I nervously bite my nail as I continuously glance back up to the hanging succulents that were dangling precariously low to the dancing mob. "I mean look at them! Poor things! One wrong swipe of some imbeciles hand and they're gonna drop to the ground... maybe I should go save them?"

"I think that you should do whatever will make you feel the bes-"

"You're the best, Gen," I race up and drag over a small stool, shoving a few groups of dancing teens to the side as I fiddle with the hanging pot.

"Finally!" I let out a triumphant smile as I step down from the stool, hanging pot in hand. "There you go, little fella..."

"What are you all looking at?" Gen stands up and walks over to me, a scowl appearing across her face as she looks at the groups of people that were staring at me. "Don't you have better things to do? Go make out with someone in a corner, or drink some punch, or do whatever godforsaken dance you all seem to love. I mean it makes you all look like absolute fools, but you all never seemed to let that stop you before."

"Ah! How dare you!" Kassidy, one of the girls who was on the dance team let out a scoff as she looked at Genevieve in disgust. "At least I'm not adopted by the same man that adopted my boyfriend... imagine that. Pretty disgusting if you ask me- I mean, it's bordering on incestuous really."

Genevieve let out a little giggle, before looking over at Kassidy, her face falling as she took a step towards the girl, whose face quickly fell as she looked at Genevieve. "At least my boyfriend isn't the local drug dealer... and, at least I'm not his most popular customer."

Kassidy's face flushed a vibrant red as she sputtered out unintelligible words, looking around at everyone before letting out a little 'humph' and storming out of the party.

"Anyone else have a problem with me?" Gen looked around at everyone else, smirking slightly when she saw them all shake their heads and turn their eyes away from her. "No? Good."

After Kassidy's unfortunate exit from the party, everyone had awkwardly turned away and begun to talk to their friends in hushed whispers.

"How did she even know?" Janice glanced towards us out of the corner of her eye as she talked with her friend.

"I mean, it's not like it a secret that they were dating... and the entire school knows that Sam is the one to go to if you need anything." Her friend shrugged it off and quickly grabbed Janice's hand, dragging her back towards the populated dance floor. "Come on, I want to go find Courtney, maybe she can tell us where Lauren is."
