Chapter 37: Final test

Mara put her phone down after texting Natasha and walked to the meditation room. Dr. Adisa was already waiting for her with Shuri by her side.

Guards were once again outside the door in case something would go wrong. Shuri and the doctor smiled at Mara, which she gladly returned.

"Decided to join today's session Shuri?" She joked.

"I couldn't miss you becoming a free woman now, could I?" She responded in the same lighthearted tone.

The three of them walked inside and took their respective seats. Mara didn't feel as nervous as she expected, she felt ready instead. This felt like her time.

"Alright, Mara. You know the drill by now. Eyes closed and deep breaths. I will now not use your verbal cues to put you in a hypnotic state, since you will not be in that either in real-life scenarios." The doctor explained. "Are you ready to begin your test?"

Mara nodded. "I'm ready." She took a few deep breaths to slow down her heart rate and to calm her mind.

That is when the doctor began saying her trigger words in Russian.

The room felt tense, waiting for any sign from Mara.

Nothing happened. Mara still felt in control. She cracked a giant smile and looked at the two other women.

"I'm okay" she said whilst smiling and tearing up. "I'm finally free."

The three women all brought each other into a group hug, happy that Mara was finally in control of her own mind.

After being congratulated by King T'Challa and other Wakandans, Mara quickly made her way over to her room to call Natasha.

After only two rings she picked up.

"Hey babe, how did it go?" Mara started crying from happiness.

"I did it baby, I'm free!" She yelled, to which the redhead yelled in response too.

"That's amazing! I'll tell Steve to come get you as soon as possible."

"Thank you Nat."

"For what?" The redhead asked confused.

"For believing in me and helping me through this. It was so hard not having you by my side." Mara sighed.

Natasha felt a pang of guilt at those words. "I'm always here for you. Now come home soon because I miss you."

"I will. See you soon Nat."

"See you soon."

And with that, the two women hung up. It felt surreal that they would finally be able to hold each other again after spending a month apart.

Mara quickly went to grab her things and got ready to say goodbye to everyone.

When Natasha hung up her phone, she felt stressed. She would have to face the consequences of her actions soon.

Mara coming home meant that Natasha would be reminded of her cheating behaviour every time she would look at her girlfriend. 

She knew she would not be able to keep up her act for long and would likely have to come clean.

That thought frightened her, because she might lose the one person the truly ever loved.
