Let me take you back to her previous birth. In her previous life, she was a devotee of Lord Shiva and did penance. Lord Shiva became happy and ask her to wish for anything, she wished for a bridegroom with many qualities but it is impossible to find all those qualities in one man but Lord promised her to give her the bridegroom of these qualities in her next life and disappeared.
In her next birth, she was married to five men (Pandavas) i.e., her wish was fulfilled but instead of one, she got five grooms.
Another story that is in circulation is that she asked for various qualities grooms, not groom. Because of a slip of tongue, she got five grooms.
So, she was first married to Arjun and he along with 4 Pandavas come home and ask their mother to come and see what he brought? His mother was busy, so she ordered them to divide whatever he brought among all the brothers. To fulfill their mother's order, they all marry her. That's why she got 5 husbands.
