JORGEN

"Are you having trouble lighting that?"

I frown, staring at it, "no, not at all. Not even a little bit."

"Sure?"

So the fireplace only gets used a couple times a year and this year I did get it checked to make sure it's not a hazard but that doesn't mean that I know how to light it easily. "Okay, maybe a little trouble, but it's fine, I think I've almost got it."

She's giving me a look, I can feel it. A month and a week of living with Jessie and I know exactly the face she's making.

"Stop looking at me like that," I reach over and run my hand up the back of her calf. "I can feel you looking at me."

"I am simply amused that Jay Hadley, first responder extraordinaire, ex-teenage delinquent, father of my pyromaniac son, can't light a fire." She bends over, placing a kiss on my temple. "And I'm wondering why you're lighting it now, when we have to spend all day at your Uncle's and won't be able to feed it."

"I'm hoping that it'll leave a good coal bed so when we get back late tonight I can light it again very easily, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to want to give me that mercy."

"No, it doesn't seem to want to," she laughs lightly. "I say leave it, we're going to be late to early dinner."

"Alright, alright," I set down what I'm working on, standing up, settling my hands on her shoulders. "You're out-dressing me."

"Wait until your son gets down here," she responds, sticking her tongue out at me.

"Oh, boy, what did you manage to convince him to wear?" I turn my head toward the stairs. "Connor!"

"Hold on!" He yells back, sort of faint through the walls.

"So what, exactly, because I couldn't catch it from your Mom, is the plan for today?"

I frown, "from what I've heard, we're going over, having some snacks, throwing all those willing to participate out onto their pond to run them ragged, though Connor is the only young one so this is really a thing they're bringing back from when my Dad was little, not even from me, then we're eating dinner, midnight mass is offered at 8 here which is a blessing in itself, do you remember how awful actual midnight mass was?"

She lets out a sort of little laugh, "I remember a few things about it when we were all Connor's age still, you used to sleep with your head on the pew in front of you but you were one of the only kids in the grade tall enough to do that."

"I'm pretty sure my forehead still has a dent," I shake my head. "But that's good and even better, well, I'm not so sure about that statement, is that two of my players go to this same little church so we'll run into Rocket, Hakon and Rocket's Mom Helen, alongside potentially his family, I'm not sure."

"Of all the people on your team that could've been attending, those two would not have been the ones I would've picked."

I shrug, "things here are never not interesting."

"I've come to learn as much."

"After that, it should be done at nine or so, which is sort of early for the two of us, sort of late for Connor, we set up cookies and things, then put him in bed, which if the pond time works like it should, he should be pretty exhausted, excited still, but exhausted."
