I was born with a silent voice that spoke volumes but disintegrated into the void.

I hold no contempt towards my parents for who they were when they were younger, nor do I despise them for who they are now. It is a rarity that we ever get to choose the battles that this life throws our way so no, if you thought this was a story about my revenge against them you are wrong.

Because unfortunately despite their words like salt on my already open wounds, despite the cloak of invisibility I had thrown over me all through my childhood, despite never being enough while doing everything I could to stand out- I do not hate them. My disdain is not to be confused with hatred, perhaps pity but never ever hatred.

When I graduated early and was brought to Marx House it was the first time in my life that I ever felt seen. I became accustomed to being Niklaus; the bother, the accidental child, the nuisance. But once I'd arrived and been welcomed by Mr Elvis and Patricia it was almost impossible not to be seen.

And at first, it was foreign to me, the way they'd offer to do things for me that wasn't required of them. Helping with my calculus homework, teaching me how to prepare meals for myself, how to make friends, sew a button into my shirt when it came loose and just...be a human. They never needed to do any of that, and yet they did. And they will remain forever in my favour for that.

It was Elvis who'd brought to light my adoration for the political world, he would lecture me often on the history of Czechoslovakia and its history with the Soviet Union and all the pain and suffering they'd inflicted on the many other countries that followed the Warsaw Pact.

This is a treaty agreement between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and Romania although it was currently rumoured that Albania withdrew plans to withdraw from it. It's an organization of Central and Eastern European Communist states. The states are all allies and will fight together if one of them was attacked.

Lies were told that we would all benefit, lies were told that it was in our best interest as communist countries to band together, however it was becoming clear it was only in the best interest of Russians. It spoon-fed them the systematic ability to strengthen the Soviet hold over the other participating countries.
