Chapter 21: Goodbye, Hoseok

The intercom crackled, and stayed on. Somebody must have pressed on the button too long, which locks it into the on position. They were speaking Korean, but still...my understanding of the language was enough that I could understand what they were saying.

"-ow long do you think that he's going to keep this up?"

"I don't know. I didn't expect him to keep it going this long. I thought he was going to just come here and woo her a bit, get bored, and that would be the end of it."

"He's going awfully far to win a bet."

"You know Hobi. He never backs down from a challenge."

"He's not as bad as JK."

"Hey! How did this become my fault?"

"Do you think that maybe he actually cares for her?"

"It's only been two weeks. I don't think so."

"Even if he does, it can't be that deep, yet."

"She's a nice lady. I hate to see her get hurt."

"I'd hate to see him get hurt, too."

"It's too late for that now. Eventually he's either going to win the bet or give up, and one or both of them is going to end up with hurt feelings."

"Then what?"

"Then we go home. Hobi, too."

"But what if he really..."

"He doesn't."

"But if he does, do you think that he'd leave us?"

"No. He likes performing too much. You know that."

"I guess....but he does seem happy with her, don't you think?"

"I tried to warn you all that they were disgustingly cute together."

"It's true. They are."

"You don't think that he's faking it?"

"I don't know. He never really dates anybody, so we don't know what he's like in a relationship. It's hard to tell."

"Relationship? Is that what we're calling it?"

"What else would we call it?"

"Subterfuge?"

"Lying?"

"Playing around?"

"Boredom?"

"Not a relationship. It can't be."

"I don't know, guys...He does seem awfully happy with her.

"Then I guess we kinda have to hope that it's for the bet, don't we?"

"Why?"

"Because if it's more than that, then we might lose him."

"Yeah...I don't think that we could continue without him. Without any one of us, really."

"It's just for the bet. It has to be."

"When he accepted that bet, we all assumed she was some kind of hideous monster. But she's actually kind of pretty."

"Sure. If you can get past the-"

"Be nice."

"I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just stating the obvious. She's pretty, but she's-."

"Stop it."

"Hobi has never cared about that kind of stuff. You know that."

"Maybe he should. ARMY would eat her alive. She's too nice to be put through that."
