Chapter 4

I froze and snapped my eyes shut as the large wolfs head snapped in my direction, I didn't think this through..

I heard a low large growl which turned into a vicious bark, making my voice seem like a mouse in comparison.

I squeezed my eyelids tighter together, even if I had no chance of winning, I'd try my best.

For my family.

I changed into a fighting stance before I opened my eyes to face this wolf head on.

That's when our eyes met.

I stared into the wolfs green eyes, they weren't a light green, more like a deep swamp green.

Suddenly I couldn't breath, I felt my heart quicken until it felt like it had raced out of my chest, everything around me became blurry.

Except one thing.

The wolf that stood in front of me was so clear.

I wanted to run towards them, to embrace them, inhale their scent.

Love them.

A whimper forced itself out of my throat, the distance from the wolf that had previously made me feel safe, suddenly felt like the worst thing in the world.

My chest felt like it was about to explode.

I couldn't think straight until one word popped up in my mind.

Mate.

No doubt the wolf in front of me was the one I was supposed to be with for the rest of my life.

Suddenly the wolf let out a growl that ended in a 'woof.'

I watched them take a step forward, then another, that's when I remembered, as soon as I saw them rush forward I scrambled to turn around and I booked it.

Suddenly I felt the stress my body was under, already in a bad condition from tiring myself out earlier.

I heard their footsteps grow closer, I tried to push myself further but that only ended up hurting my muscles more.

I tucked my tail underneath me as I felt the wolfs breath on my heels I felt their jaws snap at my legs, but not very hard.

I knew I couldn't keep running, they'd catch me, any second now they'd catch me.

I braced myself, I knew this was gonna hurt, I heard them let out a low whine before I just stopped running.

I felt my mate crash into me, I let out a loud yelp, I felt my face crash into the ground and we both went tumbling.

It was now or never, I quickly scrambled out from under my mate and began running back towards my house, even though my back legs dragged for a few seconds and my running was off balance.

My adrenaline made me forget about the pain long enough for me to create some distance.

I didn't hear any footsteps coming towards me, and I prayed my dad and the other wolf ran away.

I pelted through the forest, ignoring the burning sensation in both my heart and my lungs, I heard a sorrowful howl in the distance that broke my heart.

Another whimper forcefully left my mouth, and I felt myself wanting to turn around, but I didn't.

I ran into town and didn't bother shifting back, I continued running until my house was in sight.

I realized the door was open, but I didn't question it, I busted through the door and felt my claws slide on the wooden floor, finally I collapsed and I began to hyperventilate.

I let out a dry whimper, and that's when I noticed blood dripping down from my face.

'It must of been from when my face smashed into the ground' I thought, the pain finally caught up with me and I let out a weak painful howl.

I saw two shadows loom over, I moved my eyes in their direction to see Bernie and Lexi standing over me.

Both of them looked confused and shocked, after a few moments of silence Bernie spoke, "..Ryan?..." Lexi stepped forward and leaned down, "What the hell!? Ryan are you okay?!"

I wanted to point out that, no Lexi, I was not okay, thanks for asking.

I huffed and closed my eyes, letting out a painful groan.

I heard them move around when I felt a cold compress touch my head causing me to flinch back which caused me to yelp.

I shot my eyes open to glare at Lexi, "Sorry! Sorry! I was trying to help! Ill give a warning next time." she smiled at me and I could see Bernie glaring from behind her, but I didn't really care.

The thought of wondering if my mate was okay crossed my mind, but I pushed it away.

"What happened?" Lexi asked softly, I felt a flicker of jealousy, Lexi was so caring..

And my mate was out killing people.

'I guess it's a shewolf then..' I thought to myself ignoring Lexi, 'no wonder she looked so elegant.'

Suddenly the door burst open again, and at the door stood my very frantic looking dad, he looked down at me before rushing over, "Holy shit Ryan! Are you okay?"

I felt him start looking over me and Bernie leaned down next to him, "What happened?"
