Before anyone can answer to what Jace just said, I step outside to place the salad on the table

Before anyone can answer to what Jace just said, I step outside to place the salad on the table. Jace and my dad fall quiet instantly. It's clear to the both of them that I heard their conversation. I look at them with an empty stare, shocked at the words that just came out of my boyfriends mouth.

"Good to see you, honey. Happy birthday" Dad says, not daring to give me a hug after what I just heard.

"What's going on?" I say, wanting an explanation right away. I feel shocked, almost close to tears. Before anyone can answer, mom an Ava arrive back outside. They don't notice my uneasiness, too busy to get everything done for the guests. Jace pulls me away from the others. I notice the angry glare my dad is giving my boyfriend right away. Anxiety rises inside of me, as I'm starting to shake slightly.

"Calm down baby, I'll explain later" Jace says, and the stare he's giving me calms me down right away.

"I don't even know what to say. Drug lord?" I chuckle ironically, trying to put the pieces in my head together. How I would love to confront my dad, but to my despair, the guests arrive.

"Come on, put on a brave face, okay? You'll be fine" Jace encourages me. I put on the fakest smile that's ever been on my face, and nod my head at back at him. I'm happy to see my grandparents, aunt and uncle, as well as my cousin, I am. Today's circumstances just make it hard to enjoy the time with them. Thanking everyone for the presents they got me, we soon take our seats and enjoy the food my mom has prepared. Jace leaves my side to help mom with the meat and the veggies for the BBQ.

I manage to fool everyone into thinking that I'm alright, but I'm happy when we finish eating and everyone scatters around the garden to look at the flowers and to have a conversation. We spend a few hours doing just that, before coming to the table again to eat pie and drink coffee. I was able to avoid my Dad pretty good so far. My sister's happy that he's here, and I'm glad that she's keeping him busy. She's always loved our father immensely.

"Mila, come around more often, will you? We miss you" my grandpa says to me, as they hug me goodbye. My heart breaks at his words.

"I will gramps. Love you" I tell him sincerely.

"Jace, take care of my little Mila?" my grandma tells my boyfriend, pulling him in for a hug too.

"I promise" he smiles at her, quickly glancing at me. My aunt, uncle and my cousin Levi leave just minutes after. I let out a big breath.

"You okay?" he asks me, placing his arms around my waist.

"Yeah, I just need to..." I start, but stop right away when I see my mom rushing by to bring all of the dirty plates into the kitchen. I grab Jace's hand to pull him into the same bathroom from earlier.

"Please tell me what's going on, I can't take this any longer" I tell him with begging eyes.

Jace lets out a long sigh before he starts talking. "I'm really sorry you had to find out this way, but I basically know your Dad from the drug scene. He's one of the biggest dealers on the West Coast. On the outside he's a harmless legal weed dealer, but you don't know half the shit that goes on in his place" he explains.
