Kai swam a lot slower than before so I just swam myself a little ways in front. Until I saw a tall figure swim super fast, like a blur, a purple maybe pink blur. "Kai did you see that?" Kai swiveled around and stared into the ocean, the mean ocean that was making me look bad. "No, but I heard something, what was it did you see?" I shook my head, then I saw it again, and I was sure there was something, or someone, watching us. "Kai, get ready for something, anything." Kai swam and stayed by my 12 o'clock. He raised his hands in position. "What is it, Zayana?" he asked. "I-I don't know. It might be nothing." My worries started to dissipate and I began to think it was nothing until I saw something big and pointy being hurled at me. I turned my head but got distracted when Kai yelled,"Zayana!" Something flew across my cheek and I felt something warm slide down. I threw my body toward that direction and felt up by my cheek. Pulling my fingers back into eye view, blood coated my fingertips. "Who did that?" I looked around and saw another blur swimming away super fast. I swam so furious toward the blurs I didn't notice when Kai had pulled on my fin, pulling me closer to him. I struggled,"Let me go! They had no reason to cut me so I'm gonna have no reason to punch them." I pushed against him and finally he let me go, mostly. He kept a grip on my wrists in an attempt to settle me down. "Zayana, calm down. Shhh." Noticing Kai's serious face and his focused eyes, I stopped struggling. "What is it, Kai?" "Look, that's a palace spear. They've been in the palace or work there." Kai swam forward and pulled me along. I felt trapped and annoyed. Kai couldn't control me, and he sure couldn't hold onto my wrists without my permission. A lightbulb went off and my idea started to take shape. I swam beside Kai and when it seemed he had loosened his guard, I pushed off of him with my tail. He tried to grab me again but missed. I swam at full speed, swimming around the corner and a startled face swiveled to look toward me. They grabbed a rock but I blasted them before they could even blink, I could tell now it was a she. She was propelled backwards and hit her head on a rock. Though I felt a twinge of guilt, I said to myself reassuring words. Next time don't try to kill me with a spear. But after a millisecond of staring I felt immensely terrible and started forward to help her out . . . when I heard the gasp. "Zayana! What'd you do!" "Me?" Kai swam forward and scooped the girl up in his arms. "This is my friend! You can't go around shooting people with bubbles!" "Well, I was gonna help her out, but then you . . ." My voice trailed off. And I had that sense of something squirming in me again, telling me something Kai had said was wrong. Then it hit me like a second load of bricks. He didn't say merpeople, he said people. As in a human, as in he knows what humans call each other. As in he's been to the surface. And, though I wasn't positive, not just been to the surface but has been a human. "You lied to me," I said in a whisper. A tear pushed its way out of my eye. Kai must've realized what he said too because he took a little step back, well not a step but, you know what I mean. "I . . . Zayana, listen. I-I was going to tell you, I swear I just-" I clenched my fists and held back the army of tears that wanted to follow their rogue. "You liar! I thought we were friends!" "We are." "Obviously we're not. Because friends trust each other and they can feel safe around each other. Neither of those do we have right now." I slowly and wiped my tears," Zayana. Wait! I'm sorry, Zayana!" I blasted away, tears, or bubbles, trailing behind me. That's right, Kai was a human and he lied to me. I mean I didn't tell him, but when I confessed he should've too, that was the perfect time to do it! Now, I truly was alone.

It was an hour and a half later that I found myself above the surface, sitting on a rock that was curved like a chair. I curled up into a ball and thought about my mom for the first time. Like, actually thought about her. A glimpse of her ran through my head and I remembered being cradled and her singing a song to me. I didn't see a face but I heard the words. When things aren't going well, don't think about it, don't think about it, just move your body with the flow. When no one seems to listen, don't think about it, don't think about it, come to your mother and she'll tell you all is well. I remembered another song, one about the ocean, and now I understood. The waves will crash all around and the crabs might seem to bite just jump into the water and everything's alright! Friends are all around you they embrace you with their joy, don't forget your mother she'll tell you everything's alright, salty water hugs you, every fish is loyal, don't forget your mother who never disapproves of your choice, and make sure you follow your heart as long as you do that everything will be alright! I could tell she had a beautiful voice and she held the last note as long as she possibly could. The next one was weird. Don't forget this password, its the key to save the light no one knows this so you have to stay out of sight. These last words are important don't forget my little one, these are the words that matter so remember every single one. Things aren't always what they seem so don't assume the worst find the guilty and don't forget the ones you love in the process. I wonder what that meant, the last words are important don't forget my little one, these are the words that matter so remember every single one? Oh well, probably just a silly little song she came up with. All of a sudden I heard something, a swish. I swiveled my head around and narrowed my eyes. Someone was out there watching me, I could feel it. I lied my head back down when someone pulled on my tail and dragged me down I turned toward them as soon as my head fell underwater. I looked around and, in a swirl of bubbles, blasted away. I hugged myself to the big rock and wished I was invisible, they obviously wanted to kidnap me. My captor was an. . . . old lady. Well that's different, I was expecting creepy old man. The old woman appeared mad and something else I just couldn't explain it but something like, she was scared out of her mind. I was about to blast her when I noticed she was looking around frantically like she couldn't find me, like . . . I was actually invisible. I brought my hand up to my face, I could see it why couldn't she? The woman darted away surprisingly fast and I knew I had to follow her. She cut around a ton of corners and a few times I lost her until I saw her move around another corner. Suddenly she dove down but I wasn't paying attention so I hit my face against a rock. I could tell I had a few cuts from the stinging on my cheek, forehead, and nose. I didn't have time to tend to my cuts so, through the pain, I followed. The woman swam into a tunnel and she seemed to relax when she went inside. After a moment of looking around, and not catching the invisible merperson in front of her, she started unlocking continuous combination codes and locks. I trailed behind her and gazed around. There were three tunnels leading out to different directions from the one I was at. I picked the far left one. It was a kitchen, a table with a single chair on either side of the table, a sink and a pot boiling on the stove. There was a cutting table and a knife right next to it, there were some cut up tomatoes and a cake on the other side of the sink. I swam over and took off a little piece and put it in my mouth. Mmm, tasted something like coconut. My favorite. I took a little more. This was probably the best cake I'd ever had, it was so good. I didn't know what they call cake or how they make it but I needed the recipe. I swam out of the kitchen, confused to see blank walls with no picture frames or anything, and into the middle tunnel. It was a living room. A couch, a tv, and a few plants scattered about. It reminded me of home. I swam out and into the other room where the old woman was. She was sitting on a bed and holding something in her hands. I swam closer and it was a picture of a family. A younger version of her, a man, and two kids, both girls. They all looked so happy. A tear escaped from the old lady's eye and it slowly began to grow bigger and into a bubble. She was smiling but you could easily tell it was a sad smile. Another tear escaped and she rested the picture back down on the bed rest table." I'm so sorry, that happened to you." At first I was scared of who the voice belonged to. The voice sounded so old and tired and stressed. She turned towards me and for a second I forgot I was invisible, when she turned towards me her eyes widened I wondered what she was looking at then I turned my head around looking for what caught her eye, until I realized it was me. I waved nervously and tried to get out a hi before she threw something sharp at my face. You'd think I'd know how to dodge when people seem to think throwing stuff at me is the answer, but no. No, I don't. This time it was on my other cheek." What is wrong with merpeople and throwing sharp stuff at me. What's your problem? I didn't do anything to you. My face probably looks a mess of scratches and I'll have a ton of scars." The woman's face changed so suddenly I took a step back. ( I gave up trying to figure out what they call knees, steps, and other things ) " What are you doing in my house?" I was astonished," What were you doing when you pulled me into the water and tried to grab me here?" " I apologize, but why did you follow me into my house and how did you disappear when I know I checked everywhere," she pointed a finger at me. At first I was afraid and started breathing hard, but then I put on a reassuring and confident face," I'm super fast and I know how to hide, I know every single hiding place my side of the ocean." She nodded like she understood." But you didn't answer my question, why did you follow me to my home?" " I'm sorry, if I wanted to know why someone was trying to kidnap me, maybe your a serial killer and I could get a reward for finding a secret base of a super villain, I don't know," she blinked." Kids always talking crazy stuff, and assuming the worst of merpeople." I sighed." Now, why did you want to capture me?" She tensed up a bit," I thought you would want to know something." I looked at her weird," What?" " I am the Witch." She must've noticed me about to gasp because she quickly added," but I'm not who everybody thinks I am."
