"Things with work have been... strange," a familiar man muttered, holding the wheel of a 1994 Ford Mustang. Next to him was a woman in her early thirties. You were in the back seat.

"I'm sure it's just the season," the woman tried to reason it out. "Curses are usually more active at certain times of the year, right?"

"Yes, but not now's not the time." the man frowned. "One of the clans had a powerful kid, and he recently got his cursed technique. Curses have been on edge ever since." After shaking off a vague thought, he took a deep breath. "Maybe I should request a leave of absence for a bit. I can't afford anything unexpected happening on a mission... especially not now with Y/n."

You couldn't help but let off a small whimper in the back seat.

"Y/n," The woman turned her head towards you. "Are you ok?"

"I-I'm fine mom," you choked. You really weren't.

Letting off a soft sigh, your mother picked you up before gently seating you on her lap. "Sweetie, please tell me what's wrong."

Burying yourself in her arms, you begun to tremble. "I feel something scary..."

The man took a quick glimpse at you. "I'm sure it's nothing, just your imagination." After a deep breath, he looked back to refocus on the road once again. "And if it's anything, your father will protect you."

Though his words did reach you, you couldn't help but feel a looming sense of dread. There was something scary coming... and no one seemed to feel it but you.

Just then, the car swerved leading you to squeal a bit. Though you three were safe, this was when your father seemed to share your same sense of uneasiness.

"That was strange..." he muttered, fists clenched on the wheel. And then the unimaginable dread hit.

Your dad slammed the foot on the breaks as a special grade curse appeared in front of the vehicle, scratching the bonnet in the process.

The three of you froze in fear, but your dad was the first one to shake it off.

"Take Y/n and run!" He yelled, quickly unbuckling his wife's seatbelt before unbuckling his own. Grabbing a knife from his pocket, his hand was shaking. He knew this knife would never be enough, but he had to make it work. "I-I'll fend it off!"

As your mom came to her senses, she pulled you out of the car before it was completely blown away by the curse. She didn't dare look back... no, she couldn't move. Still shaking, you looked up to your mom to see life draining from her face. Her crimson blood was staining your clothes.

Your father looked back as he choked on his own breath. He was at a loss for words. Though he vowed to handle the curse, it was too fast. It wound up killing your mother before your very eyes, before he could even do anything.

He bolted towards you, swooping you into his arms before making his attempt at running away. Though this was all he could do, it was hopeless. He couldn't protect his wife, and he couldn't even protect you.

It was only a matter of time before his stomach was completely impaled, blood pouring out of his mouth before he dropped on his knees.

"Y-Y/n sweetie..." your dad gasped, "I-it's going to be alright, everything is going to be alright..." Even in his dying breath, he was trying his best to console you. He didn't even have the time to mourn his wife. "Just run a little further. Your daddy's going to protect you."

"D-dad," you whimpered, holding onto him tightly. "Promise me you'll be alright!"

He shot you a conflicted gaze, before shaking his head. He knew he couldn't make a promise he couldn't keep. "Leave, and don't come back," your father coughed out some blood. He gave you one last tight hug before gently wiping the tears out of your eyes.
