Taylor's POV

We go to the club in two days. I chose to go into work this morning since I decided my temporary leave was coming to an end and I was actually excited and prepared to go.

It's my birthday today and I'm honestly still dreading it without both Ryan and Sophia here with me.

I got ready this morning just before ten—but not without receiving a "happy birthday" breakfast in bed from Nicolas— and headed into work around eleven.

I'm currently sorting through files before my next appointment at two.

A knock on my office door interrupts me and I look up, Lauren standing there with a bright smile on her face.

"Hey Taylor. It's nice to see you back," she smiles and takes a seat in front of me.

"It's great to be back honestly," I smile back, pushing my files aside and intertwining my hands in front of me.

"I heard that it's your birthday. Happy birthday!" She says.

I smile, "Thank you," It still doesn't feel the same without Ryan and Sophia here with me.

"You really took me up on that leave," she laughs. "You were gone for almost a year."

"I know, but I needed the time for myself and my life. A lot was going on and I took the time to figure quite a few things out."

"I get it. I wish I could take a year break," she sighs. "But I'm here, running this place."

"Yeah, what's up with our boss? How's she doing?" I ask.

"Oh, you haven't heard?" She asks, her forehead creased.

"No. Heard what?"

"She'll be coming back in a few months. She's doing much better now and she left me in charge until she gets back," she explains.

"Oh that's great to hear," I say.

"Yeah it is."

I swallow a huge lump in my throat. "How do you know Victor?" I ask the question I've been meaning to ask her for a while now.

"He's a friend of mine that comes here from time to time," she explains, picking at her newly manicured finger nails.

I'd hate to think that Lauren is somehow involved with him or the whole mafia thing. But it would make sense.

Why else would he be here? Visiting her, of all people?

"And what kind of things does he come here looking for?" I ask.

"The simple kind of stuff," she shrugs.

"And that is?"

"Files and stuff," she sighs and looks at me. "Taylor, you wouldn't understand. It's boss work, nothing to special."

"You're not the boss here Lauren, Daphne is. You're running things because she's sick. You could help me understand "boss work" starting with telling me what he comes to you about."

"He just asks me about—"

"Taylor?" The secretary calls my name through the speaker.

Lucky bitch.

"Yes Brooke?" I answer, my eyes on Lauren the entire time.

"There's a call waiting for you on line four," she says sweetly.

I sigh," Thanks Brooke. I'll take the call."

"Of course," she turns off the speaker, connecting me to the call right away.
