It was a song that snatched me away from the void, back to reality.

I opened my eyes underwater, my heart contracted in my chest as I realized we were drowning.

In a frenzy, I closed my nose with my left hand, pursed my lips so that no water got inside, and looked around for any signs of Noah. Sure enough, I found him floating underwater, his body upside down like a dead fish. I swam towards him, kicking my legs with all my might against the current, hugged his waist with my right arm, and headed upwards, struggling to keep my lungs from exploding. My head started spinning from the lack of oxygen, my legs were tiring from holding two weights, Noah's and my own. The surface seemed so far away as I kept swimming up, up, up, until I wasn't even sure it was the right direction.

Minutes that counted as hours passed. My throat screamed out in pain, and as I kicked and kicked, I fought that last, excruciating release of breath, that last cry that announced my imminent death.

If I die here and now, then Noah will, too.

And it'll be my fault.

Another innocent soul, killed by Hitori Yuuki.

At last, I saw the light.

I took my first deep breath as I reached the surface. Oxygen into my lungs, my veins, my exhausted muscles. Life greeted me again with open arms, and with the last bit of strength surging back into my limbs, I took the unconscious Noah to the shore.

The song that woke me up seemed so far away when I was underwater,I barely registered its lyrics, but as I got out, the feminine voice suddenly became louder, clearer, playing right into my eardrums, sinking its fangs deep into my skin.

A sweet voice, telling some sort of prophecy.

It spoke about me, then it mentioned Noah.. the rest of the song was unclear, something about a doll, an angel, and..death.

What are we up against, Noah?

The boy I have just saved lies on his back, his eyes closed, his face so peaceful. I kneeled down to listen for any breathing sounds, and there they were, a little quiet, but existing. Noah was very much alive and well.

At that time, my relief blinded me from suspicion.

I hadn't stopped to think about the reason why Noah was even alive.

Why he wasn't already drowned when I found him floating underwater.

Why I wasn't dead myself.

And most of all, I hadn't even remembered that I don't know how to swim, and have never learned to.

At that time, I simply left Noah to wake up at his own pace, and looked up and down and around, scanning my environment.

We were in a cave. Stalactites decorated the ceiling, so sharp they could cut someone in half the moment they collapsed. Some of them were so long they were grazing the surface of the lake we initially fell in. The first thing I noticed was that we weren't exactly in total darkness. Instead, a warm orange light projected everywhere, as though it was a weak version of the sun. The source was completely unknown to me, but that was not my immediate concern. As I looked down at the lake, I saw the image of the stalactites reflected on it, crystal clear.

My blood froze in my veins, when I finally took in the scenery before my eyes.

The sharp edges of the stalactites , along with their reflection, looked like two rows of pointy teeth, inside a monster's mouth. True to the image I had in my mind, I started to notice a faint, although strange smell.
