A/N: I will be taking stories from a redditer that works as a search and rescue officer. His username is searchandrescuewoods so if you would like to see his stories check him out on reddit. Or if you don't want to read it yourself, here's a link to a channel that read his stuff. https://youtu.be/nhkgXOUDetc (you might just have to copy and paste it lol)
One thing that seems to happen when someone climbs the stairs is, people arenever found again. One second the bloodhounds are on their trail and the next they can't pick it up again. One story he tells is of a time one of his friends (I may be remebering who climbed them wrong) climbed the stairs because thier curiosity got the better of them. When he climbed the stairs he felt a sense that he was doing something very wrong. He described it as; ". . . like the feeling you'd get if you were in a government building that you had no buisness being in. Like you were gonna get arrested or shot in the back of the head." As he was on the stairs, he said the feeling gt stronger and stronger. Eventually it became so overwhelming he had to get down. When he went back to the welcme center his trainer cornered him and stated, "you climbed up them, didn't you." The officer was confused on how he knew this and asked how he knew. His trainer then said, "because we lost her* scent." The officer was confuse on what his trainer meant, but they refused to eleborate. Now here's where my reasoning comes in.
Anytime people go missing they always follow the same pattern. Scent is lost abrubtly, any lead they had just somehow becomes useless, and for some reason no one ever seems to have seen them. That might seem pretty obvious but why does that happen? It's not just something that happens once, every time someone isn't found, it always follows those steps. If you think about a chained reaction, such as breathing, nothing changes. When you inhale, your lungs expand taking in the air, then you exhale, repeating that process over again. What if people going on the stiars is like inhaling air? When the officer stepped on the stairs, they lost the girls scent. Every evidence peice they had was useless, and there were no witnesses. When he stepped off it was like exhaling, and until someone else goes on the stairs it will be like the inhale.
These stairs also seem to appear when someone is lost. When the narrator says he encounters the stairs someone is missing. It's almost as if they appear because they want to claim a soul of their own.
*The narrator's friend was looking for a teenage girl at the time
